Tobs Fall to Steamers

Wilson Tobs News Release


EDENTON N.C.- The Wilson Tobs fell to the Edenton Steamers on Sunday Night in Historic Hicks Field by a score of 11 to 4. Wilson used five different pitchers who allowed 10 runs on 12 hits with 11 walks and committed one costly error.

The Wilson Tobs jumped on the Edenton Steamers quickly in the top of the first. Zac Mitchell walked and so did Ryan Mathews. Joe Costigan then singled to right field scoring Mitchell and advancing Mathews to third base. Mathews and Costigan trotted home on a Ryan Daughtry double. The Tobs lead after a half of an inning by a score of 3-0.

Edenton came right back against Tobs starter Brice Rivenbark. Brett Christopher led off with a single then the Coastal Plain League's leading hitter Joe Wendle doubled to right field. With runner on second and third and nobody out Brian Blasik hit an RBI groundout scoring Christopher from third. Wendle came home on a base hit by Zach Stewart making the score 3-2. Vinnie Mejia and Nathan Burns were both walked by Rivenbark loading the bases. Tim Saunders struck out for out number two. Nick Gaeta was awarded first base after four wide ones that tied the game at three to three. Ryan Brenner was the ninth man to bat and was struck out. The game was tied 3-3 going to the 2nd inning.

Wilson bounced right back with the go ahead run in the 4thinning. With two outs Mitchell walked and stole 2 nd base. Keith Morrisroe then singled home Mitchell giving the Tobs a 4-3 lead through two innings.

The Steamers re-took the lead in the bottom of the forth inning when the first three men reached against Rivenbark. Stewart knocked in the tying run on a ground out and then Burns knocked in his other two Steamer teammates to take a 6-4 lead. Rivenbark was lifted with two outs in the 4thinning. Lance Honeycutt took over and struck out Saunders for the final out. Edenton was up 6-4 after four complete innings.

Edenton added two more with two outs in the seventh, Tyler King the Tobs pitcher allowed a base hit to Brian Blasik. The RBI's were Blasik's 2nd and third of the game. All of the action happened after two walks and a throwing error in the inning. The Steamer lead was extended to 8-4 going to the eighth inning.

Edenton pushed three more runs across in the bottom of the eighth when the Steamers loaded the bases on two singles and a walk. An RBI single to center field by Christopher pushed the first two runs across. Wendle added another hit to his total and he tacked on another RBI to his resume. The lead for Edenton headed to the ninth was 11-4.

The Tobs went quietly in the ninth and fell back to .500 on the year with a record of 18-18. Final score of the game was Edenton 11 and Wilson 4.

The Wilson Tobs will be back home Monday morning at 11:05 AM vs. the Outer Banks Daredevils. This will be the Tobs only day game of the season. The Tobs will offer the businessman special as fans can purchase a sandwich (hot dog, hamburger, chicken sandwich, or BBQ sandwich) chips and a drink for just $8. The Tobs will be hosting the picnic in the park so bring your groups and enjoy lunch at the ballpark with the Wilson Tobs.
