Wilmington Sharks News Release

Down two runs after seven innings, the Wilmington Sharks scored four runs in the eighth inning and held on for a 5-4 win over the Morehead City Marlins Sunday night in CPL South Division action.

The Sharks scored their four runs in the eighth off of only one hit, as Morehead City walked four Wilmington batters in the inning. The Sharks sent 10 batters to the plate in the inning, but they could have had a bigger inning after leaving the bases loaded to end the inning.

In the eighth, Jeff Moyer's RBI sacrifice fly began the scoring as Ricardo Lizcano, who walked to open the frame before stealing second base and advancing to third, scored. Alex Freedman followed up Moyer with an RBI single to right field that plated Jake Mayers to tie the game at 3-3.

Still in the eighth, two batters later, Vickash Ramjit gave the Sharks the lead when he scored on a Morehead City passed ball. Fast forward two more batters, and Justyn Carter grabbed himself an RBI when he drew a bases loaded walk to give Wilmington a 5-3 lead.

Morehead City made things interesting when they added a run in the bottom of the eighth, but Sharks pitcher Ross Whitely came on and left two runners stranded to end the threat.

Sharks reliever Stephen Richardson picked up his first win of the season after coming on and getting the final out of the seventh inning in his 1/3 of an inning of work on the stat sheet.

Wilmington starter Chris Mazza did not factor in the decision despite tossing 6-2/3 innings and striking out five Marlins batters. Mazza also allowed three Morehead City runs and walked three batters.

Whitely earned his fifth save of the season with his 1-2/3 innings of work as he did not allow a hit or run.

In the game, the Sharks only tallied three hits - one apiece from Mayers, Ramjit and Freedman - but Wilmington drew 11 walks, including three by Jacob Leonardo and two from Carter.

The Sharks travel to Fayetteville on Monday for a doubleheader against the Swampdogs before returning home to the Shark Tank on Tuesday when they host Fayetteville as they begin a four-game homestand. Tuesday is another Time Warner Cable/Z107.5 Two ‚¬Ëœfer Tuesday with 2-for-1 admission and hot dogs as well as $2 beverages. Fans can buy and print their tickets before the game at http://www.wilmingtontickets.com/. Gates open Tuesday night at 6 p.m. with first pitch scheduled for 7:05.
