THOMASVILLE, N.C. - The HiToms scored four runs in the sixth inning to break open a one-run game as they moved past Asheboro 8-4 on Sunday afternoon at Finch Field.
The HiToms (7-2) broke the game open against reliever Zach Benard as Alex Williams shot a single through a drawn-in infield to score Stephen Carmon who singled to begin the sixth and he advanced to third on a failed pick-off. Before the frame came to a close, the Tommies pushed across three more runs to take an 8-2 lead and they never looked back as they held on for the four run victory.
Asheboro (2-6) had cut the lead to a single run before the four-run sixth against Brian Holmes (W, 4-1) as Marquis Riley and Hunter Ridge both singled to drive home runs. However, the Copperheads had a chance to tie the game in the fifth inning as Jacob Wilson lined out to left field for the second out of the inning and on the play Riley tagged from third and was gunned down by left fielder Chaz Frank for the ending inning double play.
Travis Tingle worked the final inning and allowed a two-run home run for the final 8-4 margin of the HiToms victory.
The Tommies are back in action on Monday at noon when they travel to Asheboro to battle with the Copperheads. They return to Finch Field on Wednesday night at 7:00 as they entertain the Martinsville Mustangs.
