Wilson Tobs News Release
WILSON, N.C. - The Outer Banks Daredevils defeated the Wilson Tobs on Saturday night in Fleming Stadium. The Devils won 4-2. The big blow came in the eighth inning. After the Tobs got cut the lead to 3-2, Jordan Hankins took a 2-1 pitch from Tyler Saltsman and put it over the fence in right field for a homerun. That blast put the Daredevils on top for good.
The scoring started in the top of the second when the Daredevils got two singles to start off the inning. Tobs starter Clay Murphy then got a double play ground ball. With a runner still at third, the number eight hitter in Outer Banks' lineup Tyler Sciacca hit an RBI single to right field. The score was 1-0 Outer Banks.
The Daredevils added two more RBI singles in the third and fourth innings respectively. Donnie Corsner got the RBI in the third inning. The number nine hitter Mike Levine accounted for the other RBI in the fourth inning.
The Tobs were down 3-0 going to the bottom of the fourth inning. Tony Wieber singled home Ryan Daughtry (who doubled to start the inning). Daughtry with the double extended his current hitting streak to nine games (he had a 10 game hit streak earlier in the season) and has now reached base in 23 consecutive games. Wieber was caught stealing and the rally was halted. Through four full innings the Tobs trailed 3-1.
The Tobs added a run in the bottom of the seventh, after a Jeff Kremer double, Angelo LaBruna stepped up and singled home his Duke teammate to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the eighth the Tobs got the first two men on base and had the go- ahead run at the plate but couldn't rally. Then the Tobs brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth but just couldn't execute. The final score was Outer Banks 4 and Wilson 2.
The winning pitcher was Connor Sinclair (2-1) for the Daredevils, who improved their record to 10-12 on the season (the Tobs fell to 12-11). Sinclair pitched seven innings and scattered eight hits with zero walks while striking out four Tobs hitters. The loss went to Murphy who allowed three earned runs in seven innings, while walking two and striking out four. Murphy allowed nine hits. All of the hits that Murphy allowed were singles, in fact 10 of the 11 Outer Banks hits were singles, the one hit that wasn't proved to be the difference.
The Wilson Tobs will take their talents to Edenton, North Carolina on Sunday June 26, 2011 to take on the Edenton Steamers. The Tobs are 2-5 against the Steamers this season but won the last match-up between the two teams. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm on Sunday evening. The Tobs have five games remaining in the first half of their season.
