Sharks Win Opening Game Of Road Trip

June 25, 2011 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Wilmington Sharks News Release

The Wilmington Sharks (9-13) received six strong innings of work from starting pitcher Chris Mazza and had the bats working early in their 3-2 win over the Peninsula Pilots (12-11) on Friday night in the first of four straight on the road.

Mazza (1-2) was brilliant, tossing six innings and allowing just four hits and one run while striking out five Peninsula batters. Over his first four innings, Mazza allowed just one hit.

While Mazza was dealing, the Sharks offense also put in some work in the early innings, plating all three runs in the first four innings.

The Sharks' first run of the night came off of a Kenny Bryant RBI double that sailed over the head of the Peninsula center fielder in the opening frame that scored Evan Campbell, while Wilmington added their second run two innings later when Aaron Preston ripped an RBI double into the left-center field gap that scored Ricardo Lizcano.

The final run of the night for the visiting Sharks came in the top of the fourth as Campbell singled with two outs before he later scored on a Daniel Aldrich RBI single right back up the middle.

Peninsula tallied its first run of the night in the fifth, using a pair of hits to get onto the scoreboard.

The host Pilots had a chance to tie or possibly take the lead in the bottom of the sixth when they had the bases loaded and two outs, but Mazza shut down any thoughts the Pilots might have had with a strikeout to end the inning and escape the jam.

Peninsula scored its second and final run of the night in the seventh off of Sharks reliever Tyler Deloach, when they connected on a triple into the right field corner before plating the run via an RBI groundout.

Wilmington's Ross Whitely earned his second save of the summer after striking out two of the three batters he faced in the bottom of the ninth.

Aldrich was the only Shark to pick up multiple hits on the night, tallying two of the five total Wilmington hits.

The Sharks spend the night in Petersburg, Va. on Friday night before they continue their road trip against the Petersburg Generals Saturday night. Sunday the Sharks travel to take on Columbia before ending the trip with a contest at Morehead City on Monday night.
