Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release
MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. -The Fayetteville SwampDogs swept a doubleheader from Morehead City on Saturday, winning a suspended game 5-3 and taking the regularly scheduled contest 2-1 in seven innings.
Zach Briggs broke a 1-1 tie with his third homerun of the season in the top of the seventh inning in the second game. Dillon Checkal drove in the first run of the game in the top of the sixth inning to break a scoreless tie. He finished 1-for-2 with a single and a walk.
The SwampDogs survived a scary moment in the bottom of the seventh inning. Starter Derek Brooks was one out away from a complete game when Marlins catcher Geoff Perrot lined a pitch right back to the mound, striking Brooks in the head. He remained down briefly before exiting the game under his own power, and was said to be in stable condition at the end of the game.
Brooks (5-0) finished the game having allowed just one unearned run and five hits while striking out four in seven innings to earn the victory. Cory Kent came on to strike out Garret Wittels for the final out for his second save.
Kyle Wigmore (1-2) allowed the Brooks homerun and took the loss for Morehead City.
The first game was a continuation of the SwampDogs home game from Tuesday night, suspended in the first inning tied at 2 because of lightning and rain. Brewer Carter (2-1) resumed his start from Tuesday and did not allow another run. He finished the suspended game with 7.2 innings pitched, allowing two runs on six hits with five walks and five strikeouts.
Eric Grabe's two-run homerun, hit just after the end of the first rain delay on Tuesday, finally became official with the SwampDogs win. John Hogan finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored, and Cody Davis delivered an RBI double in the win.
The two wins leave the SwampDogs at 14-10, still a game behind Florence in the CPL South. Morehead City falls to 11-12, severely hurting their chances at a first-half division title.
The SwampDogs now have a day off before returning home Monday night against the Columbia Blowfish on salute to Trunk or Treat night. Gates open at 6 p.m., with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
