Marlins Drop Two in Doubleheader

June 25, 2011 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Morehead City Marlins News Release

Morehead City, N.C. - The Morehead City Marlins lost a pair of games on Saturday to the Fayetteville SwampDogs in a doubleheader, dropping their overall record to 11-12 on the season. The first of the two games was a continuation from when play was suspended after one inning when the Marlins traveled to Fayetteville on Tuesday. The final tally became 5-3 for that one after Saturday night. The second, originally scheduled matchup was reduced to seven innings of regulation, in which the SwampDogs were victorious by the score of 2-1.

Both of the starters for Morehead City did well, despite the team's shortcomings. Marlins pitcher Shawn Armstrong suffered the loss in the first game-his first of the season-despite an impressive start. Armstrong went six innings, allowing three runs to score on six hits, walked just one batter, and struck out seven. Lefty Caleb Smith began the second game on the hill for the Marlins and finished with a no-decision. He tossed 5 2/3 innings, gave up one run on six hits, and struck out five, while walking two.

The Marlins have home games on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of this coming week. Wednesday will entail a doubleheader between the Marlins and Columbia Blowfish, making up for the game postponed in Columbia on Friday night. Sunday, the Marlins welcome the Florence RedWolves to Puck O'Neill Field. Morehead City needs a win in order to remain in contention for the first half South division title. The contest will be preceded by the Morehead City Police vs. Firemen Softball Game, so gates will open at 5:30 for that event, as the Marlins game will start at 7:05. It will also be Time Warner Cable Super Duper Sunday.

The Morehead City Marlins are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league.
