Wilson Tobs News Release
WILSON, N.C. (June 22, 2011) - Right fielder Nathan Burns drove home 1B Zach Stewart with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning for what turned out to be the winning run, as the Edenton Steamers (16-4) snapped the Wilson Tobs (10-10) five game win streak with a 3-2 win on Wednesday night at Fleming Stadium.
The one-run game was the fourth this season between the Tobs and Steamers, and Wilson fell to 1-3 in those one-run contests. Overall, the Tobs have lost five of six match-ups with Edenton this summer.
The Steamers jumped on the board first in the top of the third inning, when 2B Joe Wendle drove two home with a double down the right field line. Wilson answered in the bottom half of the inning with a run of their own thanks to a one out double by catcher Keith Morrisroe. A single by the next batter, 2B Alex Jones, pushed him to third, and Morrisroe scored on a ground out to first by 1B Steve Nikorak, pulling the Tobs within one, 2-1.
Burns' RBI single put Edenton up two at the time, but Wilson got back to within one in the bottom of the seventh when CF Ryan Mathews got aboard with a one out double to left-centerfield. Mathews stole third and then scored on a two out infield single by SS Angelo LaBruna.
Labruna's single in the seventh was followed by a walk to Morrisroe, which brought Jones to the plate. He swung at a 1-0 pitch and lined it foul off the end of the bat directly towards Tobs manager and third base coach Bruce Johnson. Johnson didn't have time to duck and was struck in the head. At the same time rain began to fall, and so the game was put on hold for 43 minutes while a storm system passed through the area.
The rain delay was the second for the Tobs in as many nights, but once the game resumed Jones lined out to end the seventh and Wilson couldn't muster anything against the Edenton bullpen in the final two innings.
Tobs starter Chase Bebout (0-3) took the loss as he allowed all three Edenton runs on nine hits in six plus innings. LHP Esterlin Paulino (3-1) got the win for the Steamers as he gave up two runs on six hits in 6 2/3 innings of work. Jordan Egan came on to pitch 2/3 of an inning in the ninth for Edenton to earn his first save of the summer.
The Tobs head to the shore to take on the Outer Banks Daredevils tomorrow, June 23, in Kill Devil Hills. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm. It will be the third meeting this season between the Tobs and the Daredevils. On the hill for Wilson will be LHP Brice Rivenbark (2-1), making his fourth start of the summer. The Tobs return home to Fleming Stadium Friday, June 24, to take on the Steamers again. For tickets call the Tobs box office at 252-291-TOBS.
