Daredevils Bat around Stars in Exhibition Win

KILL DEVIL HILLS - The Outer Banks Daredevils found their bats as they pounded the Catawba Valley Stars for nine runs and fourteen hits. A strong pitching performance from Matt Pierpont helped secured the 9-4 win for the Daredevils.

The Daredevils and Stars took the field at the First Flight Baseball Complex in an exhibition match as the Daredevils looked to right the ship and solve their recent offensive woes. The Stars jumped out to a 2-0 lead against the Daredevils' starter, Wyatt Brown. Designated Hitter Brian Dice led off the second with a single, and after a stolen base he scored on catcher Carlos Leal's single. In the third, left fielder William Ward walked and then scored on third baseman Cory Pate's single.

Not until the fourth inning did the Daredevils strike back against the Stars. Chris Baker led off the inning with a double and scored on a Donnie Corsner sacrifice fly. Right fielder Alexander Aurrichio then homered deep to left field. Chad Carman followed that blast with a single and scored on a Jordan Hankins single.

The Daredevils continued to pile up the hits in the fifth inning. Center fielder Wayne Hawkins led off the inning with a single and scored on a single by Donnie Corsner. After Aurrichio walked, Chad Carman hit a sharp line drive down the left field line for a two out, two run batted in double. Hankins then followed suit and doubled in Carman.

Matt Pierpont (2-0) pitched five strong innings for the Daredevils as he held the Stars scoreless as the Daredevils racked up the runs. He gave up 5 hits, walked one, and struck out five. Brock Wilson pitched a ninth which saw him surrender two runs, but also struck out four batters.

For the Stars, both Brian Dice and center fielder Cameron Day went two for four with a stolen base. As for the Daredevils, Chad Carman finished two for three with two runs scored, and two runs batted in. Alexander Aurrichio was one for four with a home run and two runs scored. Both Wayne Hawkins and third baseman Chris Reese finished the game two for four.
