Outer Banks Daredevils News Release
Kill Devil Hills, NC - After early offensive struggles, the Outer Banks Daredevils broke through in the sixth inning and beyond to defeat the Fayetteville Swampdogs by a score of 11-4. Mike Torrence (1-0) pitched four innings in relief for the victory.
The game did not start well for the Daredevils as the Swampdogs plated three in the first inning against starter Joe Candelmo. Right fielder Cody Hudson (1-3, 2BB, R) led off with a walk and would score on a two run home run over the left field wall by designated hitter Joe Vaskas (2-5, HR, 2B, 2RBI, R). First baseman John Hogan (2-4, R) followed Vaskas with a single and would score on a double by catcher Zach Briggs (2-4, RBI, 2B).
Candelmo would hold the Swampdogs scoreless from there, though, as he battled through five innings of work allowing ten hits, walking one batter and striking one out. Great defense also helped Candelmo out whether it was right fielder Donnie Corsner gunning a runner at home or shortstop Tyler Sciacca snagging a line drive and picking a runner off second.
The Daredevils found their bats in the sixth inning, trailing the Swampdogs 3-1. They would bat around the order as four runners would score. Sciacca (3-5, 2R, 2RBI, 2B) led off with a double and would come around to score as second baseman Jordan Hankins (2-5, 2B, RBI, R) followed him with a double of his own. Later in the inning, Corsner (3-4, 2B, HR, 3R, 3RBI) would walk and score on a wild pitch to tie the game at 3-3. Designated hitter Matthew Fleishman (0-5, R) would reach base on an error and score on a single by catcher Michael Thomas (2-4, BB, R, 2RBI) to give the Daredevils a 4-3 lead. Thomas would come around to score on a single by left fielder Ben Kazma (2-3, 2R, 2RBI), making his first start for the Daredevils.
Torrence relieved Candelmo in the sixth inning and retired the first nine of the first ten batters he faced, striking out four of them. The Daredevils picked up a run in the seventh inning as Corsner scored on another single by Michael Thomas to make the score 6-3 in favor of the Daredevils.
In the eighth inning, the Daredevils exploded for five more runs to help seal the game. With Kazma and first baseman Thomas Zengel (2-4, 2B, R, RBI) both on base, Tyler Sciacca singled to score both of them. Hankins followed with a single of his own. Corsner would have the fourth straight hit for the Daredevils - this one a deep home run over the centerfield fence - to score both Sciacca and Hankins as well as himself. This made the score 11-3 in favor of the Daredevils heading into the top of the ninth.
Torrence would give up one run, but still close the game as he threw four innings, surrendered one run, walked one, allowed three hits and struck out five. The win moves the Daredevils to 7-8 in the league and keeps them in second place in the North division.
The Daredevils return to action tomorrow against the Edenton Steamers at 7pm at the First Flight Baseball Complex in Kill Devil Hills. For more information, visit obxdaredevils.com or twitter.com/outerbankscpl.
