Wilson Tobs News Release
EDENTON, N.C. (July 19, 2011) - The Edenton Steamers (15-1, 34-9) overcame two different four-run deficits to defeat the Wilson Tobs (5-10, 20-23) by a score of 11-9 at Historic Hick's Field on Tuesday night.
The loss moved the Tobs record to 2-10 against the Steamers this summer. Down 9-5 in the bottom of the fifth, Edenton tied the score with a four-run inning. Using four hits and taking advantage of two walks, the Steamers batted around to chase Tobs starter Gil Walker from the game. Walker finished the night allowing nine runs (all earned) on nine hits, five walks, and one strikeout in 4.2 innings of work.
Edenton took their first lead of the game in the sixth. A leadoff walk to LF Brian Blasik ended up hurting Wilson as Blasik scored on a fielding error by 3B Brandon Elliott with two out in the inning. The error was the first committed by either team and resulted in the first unearned run of the game, which gave Edenton a 10-9 lead.
Wilson jumped on the board early against Edenton starter Benny Mejia. Left-fielder Keith Morrisroe led off the game with a single to extend his current on-base streak to 25 games. Following Morrisroe's hit, catcher Brian Holberton and RF Joe Costigan each walked to load the bases with no one out. Centerfield Ryan Mathews then sent two of the runners home by belting a double to the gap in right-center field. Costigan and Mathews would also cross the plate on a ground out and sacrifice fly to make the score 4-0 Wilson after half an inning.
The Steamers answered right away in the bottom of the frame. With two outs and the bases loaded DH Zach Stewart hit a single that drove in two and cut the Tobs lead in half, 4-2.
Wilson got the two runs back the very next inning. Elliott scored the first run when he trotted home from third on a wild pitch by Mejia. Morrisroe, who had advanced to third on the wild pitch that allowed Elliott to score, ended up crossing home plate when Costigan singled to left field with two outs, making it 6-2 Tobs. Mejia didn't last past the inning as he surrendered all six runs on three hits, four walks, one hit batsman, and two wild pitches in 1.2 innings.
Again Edenton answered in the bottom of the frame with a run of its own. With the bases loaded and no one out 2B Joe Wendle grounded into a 4-6 fielders choice to plate catcher Kevin Whitehead and pull Edenton to within three, 6-3.
The Steamers scored for the third straight inning in the bottom of the third when RF Nathan Burns and 1B Adam Giacalone hit back-to-back dingers to lead off the inning. After not allowing back-to-back homers all season, the Tobs have now given up back-to-back long balls in the past two games.
With the Wilson lead down to just one run, Mathews tried to provide some cushion in the top of the fourth by smacking his twelfth homerun of the season over the left field wall. The 12 homers for Mathews ties the Tobs franchise record for homeruns in a season, set in 2007 by Erick Lovett. Mathews' homerun was of the three-run variety and put Wilson ahead 9-5.
Edenton got its final run of the game on a sacrifice fly by Whitehead. Getting the win for the Steamers was LHP Eddie Perkins (2-0), despite giving up the three-run homer to Mathews. LHP Jon Levin (3-1) took the loss for Wilson. He gave up one unearned run on two hits in 1.1 innings. RHP Ethan Cole recorded his ninth save of the summer for Edenton.
The Tobs return home to Fleming Stadium tomorrow night to take on the Peninsula Pilots. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm. On the hill for Wilson will be RHP Clay Murphy (1-1), making his seventh start of the summer. Wednesday is Mascot Mania and Education Appreciation night at Fleming, and anyone with a school staff ID will be let in free of charge. For those without a school staff ID, you can purchase tickets by calling the Tobs box office at 252-291-TOBS.
