MARTINSVILLE, V.A. - Following a three-day break for the 2011 All-Star game, the HiToms picked up right where they left off as they got six strong innings from Austin Moyer as the moved past the Martinsville Mustangs 3-1 on Tuesday night at Hooker Field.
The HiToms (10-5) jumped on the board first in the top of the fourth inning as they put a pair of runs on the board. With runners and first and second, Brock Hebert stole third and came around to score on the play on an errant throw from Mustang catcher Colin Slaybaugh for the first run of the inning. After a pair of walks loaded the bases, Alex Williams sent a deep drive to left field where the ball was caught at the wall however; Jacob Rogers was able to score on the play for a 2-0 HiToms lead after four.
Martinsville (5-8) cut the lead in half against Moyer (W 3-5) in the sixth inning as Mike Anderson doubled to begin the frame and scored on a John Fairclouth sacrifice fly which made it 2-1 HiToms after six.
However, the Tommies answered right back in the top of the seventh with a run to once again make it a two run game. After back to back singles from Garrett Koster and Tanner Mathis, both runners tried to steal a base and on the play Slaybaugh fired off line for the second time in the contest allowing Koster to score and make it a 3-1 HiToms lead.
The Mustangs had a chance to tie the game in the seventh as Kurt Giller came on in relief and with runners at second and third with only one out, the Oral Roberts right hander got Nick Ferinand and Brad Vance to end the inning and preserve the lead for the HiToms.
Travis Tingle (S, 10) worked a perfect ninth inning to propel the HiToms to the 3-1 victory. On the night, the Tommies bullpen worked three innings and didn't allow a run.
The HiToms return to Finch Field tomorrow night at 7:00 when they host the Forest City Owls. It will be the final Mighty Dollar Wednesday of the 2011 season with hot dogs, 12 ounce fountain drinks and soda on sale for one dollar.
