Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release
WILMINGTON, N.C. -On Wednesday night, it was all about the catchers for the Fayetteville SwampDogs.
Zach Briggs hit a game-tying, three-run homerun in the top of the seventh inning, Nick O'Loughlin drove home Billy Urban with a game winning single in the top of the 11th, and Fayetteville (11-9) defeated the Wilmington Sharks, 5-4, at Buck Hardee Field in Wilmington. The win kept the SwampDogs just a half game behind Florence for first place in the CPL South.
Cody Davis (1-0) pitched three scoreless innings of relief to earn his first victory of the season. He allowed just one hit and struck out three in his first outing of the year longer than one inning.
Chris Mazza (0-1) allowed two hits in the top of the 11th, including O'Loughlin's winning hit, and suffered the loss.
The SwampDogs scored the first run of the game in the first inning on a steal of home. Dylan Brown walked and advanced to third on a single by Jay Cannon. With Eric Grabe at the plate, Cannon got caught in a run-down between first and second, allowing enough time for Brown to break for the plate and score ahead of the throw home.
Josh Elmore got his first start as a SwampDog, throwing four scoreless innings in his longest outing of the season. The Sharks got four runs off of relievers Alex Belew and Brandon Huffman, who was appearing in his first game with the SwampDogs.
Wilmington starter Stephen Vaughan entered the seventh inning with a 4-1 lead, and retired the first man he faced. But he then walked Urban and hit Nick Crucet, bringing up Briggs. Just 2-for-30 on the season entering the at-bat, Briggs took the first pitch he saw and belted in over the left field wall for his second homerun of the season to tie the game.
The SwampDogs now return home for the next two nights - tomorrow against the Peninsula Pilots and Friday against the Florence RedWolves. Gates open at 6 p.m. each night, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
