Sharks Fall In 11 Innings
June 22, 2011 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Wilmington Sharks News Release
The Wilmington Sharks had a three-run after six innings, but a Fayetteville three-run homer tied it before the visiting Swampdogs plated the go-ahead run in the top of the 11th inning to take a 5-4 win Wednesday night.
The stat of the night, however, was that the Sharks left 11 runners on base throughout the contest.
After a Billy Urban leadoff single in the top of the 11th came around to score two batters later for Fayetteville, the Sharks had their own opportunity in the bottom of the frame, with leadoff batter Scott Coleman reaching on an error before he was stranded at second base to end the game.
Fayetteville (11-9) took an early lead in the top of the first and the game remained that way until the bottom of the fifth when the Sharks (8-11) plated their first run of the night on an RBI groundout that plated Evan Campbell.
An inning later the Sharks added to their lead with a pair of walks and two singles plating three runs, highlighted by Jake Mayers' two RBI single that made it 4-1 in favor of the Sharks.
The lead would be short lived however, as Fayetteville immediately answered with a three-run homer by Zach Briggs tied things right back up.
The Sharks had only one hit, in the eighth, and two base runners after the Fayetteville homer.
Justyn Carter, Campbell, Mayers and Coleman each had two-hit nights to pace the Sharks, while Urban's 3-for-5 night led the Swampdogs.
Mayers finished with two RBI on the night, while Carter and Lizcano each tallied an RBI a piece for Wilmington, while three RBI from Briggs was a team high for Fayetteville.
The Sharks finish off their four-game home stand on Thursday night as they host Florence in a Fat Tony's Thirsty Thursday contest. Wilmington then hits the road for four straight before returning to the Shark Tank on Tuesday, June 28 when they host Columbia.
