Forest City Owls News Release

THOMASVILLE, N.C. - The West Division-leading Forest City Owls dropped their contest against the Thomasville Hi-Toms, 4-2, Wednesday night at Finch Field. The Owls fall to 14-8, while the Hi-Toms improve to 10-11. The Hi-Toms snapped Forest City's five-game winning streak and now own a 4-2 season series lead.

Forest City sent Seth Cutler-Voltz to the mound for his fourth start of the 2011 campaign. The VCU righty struggled for the first time his season, allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits in 6 1/3 innings. Cutler-Voltz registered eight strikeouts and one base on balls and took home his first loss of the summer.

Brian Holmes took the hill for Thomasville this evening. He fired six innings, allowing two runs on six hits, striking out six batters and walking two. Travis Tingle threw three relief innings and claimed his third victory of the season.

Thomasville struck first in the bottom of the second inning. Catcher Jacob Fisher hit a solo home run that cleared the left field wall in a hurry. Fisher's first homer of the season put the Hi-Toms ahead 1-0 after two frames. The Owls responded in the top of the third inning. With runners on second and third and one out, LF Michael Bishop poked a single into left field, sending 2B Jake Watson home.

Defensive miscues led to Thomasville's second run in the bottom of the third inning. With 3B Brock Hebert standing on second, two outs, and RF Jacob Rogers at the plate, Cutler-Voltz's pitch skipped away from catcher P.J. Torres. Torres' airmailed a throw to third base while trying to gun down Hebert, who eventually came around to score. Thomasville led 2-1 after three innings.

SS Reed Harper knotted up the contest with just one swing of the bat. Harper's solo blast to lead off the sixth inning tied the proceedings at 2-2. The Owls had a golden scoring opportunity later in the inning, loading the bases with just one out. However, Torres struck out and CF Buddy Sosnoskie grounded out to extinguish the Forest City threat.

Cutler-Voltz got into trouble in the bottom of the seventh inning, loading the bases with nobody out. Brennan Huelse entered the game in relief, facing Thomasville 2B Tyler Hall. Torres wasn't able to stay in front of a pitch in the dirt, allowing LF Patrick Koontz to race home from third. A couple pitches later, Hall laid down a squeeze bunt that brought CF Cole Sturgeon across the plate. The Hi-Toms pulled ahead 4-2 heading into the eighth inning. The Owls stranded two runners in the top of the ninth, preserving the victory for Thomasville.

The Owls begin a two-game series against the Gastonia Grizzlies tomorrow night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 PM from McNair Field in Forest City.
