Titans Get Close But Fall to #1 Gwinnett, 4-2; End Southern Swing 0-1-1-1

GWINNETT, GA - No one would have ripped the Titans if they came out flat against Gwinnett Sunday afternoon. Playing their third game in as many nights and driving overnight for an early contest after back-to-back overtime games with South Carolina, many wouldn't have given the Titans a chance against the best team in the Southern Division and the Eastern Conference.

Yet the Titans played tooth-and-nail the entire game, with a chance to tie the game in the final two minutes. But an errant pass was picked off by Gwinnett at center ice and deposited into an empty Titans net in the final 30 seconds to finally secure a 4-2 win for the Gladiators in front of 6,503 at The Arena at Gwinnett Center.

For the third consecutive game the Titans (8-11-1-219) jumped in front early. This time it was Andrew Conboy scoring less than three minutes into the contest by ripping a Kory Nagy pass past Gwinnett goalie Louis Domingue (W, 7-1, 29 saves) for the 1-0 advantage. It was the first career ECHL goal for Conboy.

The Gladiators (18-6-137) tied things up at 11:32 with John Scrymgeour's fourth of the year. But the gut punch came with 20 seconds left in the period. After Marcel Noebels went off on a hooking call, Cody Carlson got a chance to rip a blast from the right point. Scott Wedgewood (L, 6-7-1, 25 saves) made a left pad save. The rebound kicked to Tyler Murovich, who was all alone on the right post to bang home the go-ahead goal for a 2-1 Gwinnett lead.

Ian Slater continued his hot play for the Titans with a goal early in the second period. His blast from the left point blew past Domingue short-side left for his fifth goal of the year and a 2-2 tie, as Nagy and Conboy grabbed their second points of the night with assists.

Both goalies stood their ground to keep things tied until just short of the eight minute mark of the third. Wedgewood made a save on a drive through a mass of humanity from the left circle. During the scrum to get to the puck, Murovich was able to slip a shot through after a second Wedgewood save, giving the Gladiators a 3-2 advantage.

Trenton's pressure - strong throughout the game - continued in earnest until they were forced to pull Wedgewood for an extra attacker in the final two minutes. Despite some quality chances, including a solid shot off the post, Domingue and the Gladiators did lose the lead again. Only an empty-netter with 29 seconds left to play was left to decide the outcome.

For the three-game weekend the Titans played well enough to head home with a winning Southern road swing. In the end the Titans went 0-1-1-1, though they did inch closer to second place Elmira in the Atlantic Division in the process.

The Titans take back to the ice Friday for the start of a four-game home stand, as Wheeling invades the Sun National Bank Center for the first time this season at 7:05 pm.
