Everett Silvertips News Release

EVERETT - Led by a hat trick from Tyler Sandhu, the Everett Silvertips exploded offensively for a 7-5 victory over the Tri-City Americans in their 2012-13 regular season finale Sunday evening at Comcast Arena. Everett will now prepare to open the 2013 WHL playoffs against the Portland Winterhawks, with Games 1 and 2 of their first-round series coming up Friday and Saturday at the Rose Garden.

Tyler Sandhu had scored three times by the halfway point to help the Silvertips build a 6-1 lead with his first career hat trick. Josh Winquist tallied three assists to finish the season with a team-high 51 points, while Landon Oslanski chipped in a goal and an assist in the last regular season game of his junior career. Manraj Hayer also added two assists as 11 different Silvertips recorded a point and the team matched a franchise record with five first-period goals.

Everett opened the scoring only 1:31 into the game when Tyler Sandhu picked up a pass from Winquist and tucked it in around goaltender Luke Lee-Knight. The 'Tips took a 2-0 lead with a long wrist shot from Landon Oslanski that found the top corner at 7:12. Cole MacDonald set up the third goal with a great stretch pass to Carson Stadnyk, who beat two defenders and tucked the puck between the legs of Lee-Knight to extend the Silvertips' lead to three.

Tri-City got on the board midway through the period on a goal by Zachary Yuen, who slid the puck through traffic and under the pads of goaltender Daniel Cotton. Sandhu recorded his second goal of the night with less than three minutes left in the period, knocking in a rebound along the side of the net. Reid Petryk then made it 5-0 before the period was out, burying a Kohl Bauml feed to give the 'Tips a 5-1 lead with 90 seconds left in the first.

The teams exchanged goals in the second period as the Silvertips took a 7-3 lead heading into the third. Sandhu completed his hat trick eight minutes in, lifting a second-chance rebound over Lee-Knight's shoulder and into the top corner. The Americans countered with a powerplay goal from Malte Stromwall after his shot deflected off a skate in front and trickled past Cotton. Everett countered just over a minute later as Ben Betker's shot was re-directed to the far circle, where Mitch Skapski blasted a shot into an open net to make it 7-2. Connor Rankin responded by putting in a rebound in the dying minutes of the period that brought Tri-City back within four.

The Americans struck twice more on the powerplay in the third as Jesse Mychan and Stromwall both deposited rebounds to make the game close in the final minutes. Everett held off Tri-City, who pulled the goaltender for an extra attacker, in the final minutes to secure their 25th win over the season by a 7-5 final.

Daniel Cotton (10-19-0-2) stopped 24 shots in net for the Silvertips, Luke Lee-Knight turned away 17 for Tri-City as the Ams outshot the 'Tips 29-24. Everett went 0 for 4 on the powerplay, while Tri-City scored on three of six chances.

The Silvertips now have four days off before traveling to Portland to open the playoffs with Games 1 and 2 on Friday and Saturday. Everett will then host Game 3 at Comcast Arena on Wednesday, March 27 and Game 4 on Friday, March 29.
