Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Despite facing two separate three-run deficits on Saturday evening, the Fort Wayne TinCaps rallied for a series-opening 6-5 victory over the Peoria Chiefs at Parkview Field. The TinCaps belted out seven doubles, one shy of the franchise high for two-baggers in a single game, and stole three bases, using their offense to propel them to their ninth win of the year.
Fort Wayne (9-14) starter Joe Ross allowed three runs in the first inning, as the Chiefs worked five base hits off the right-hander. Although Ross surrendered five runs during his outing, he did work two innings in which he retired the side in order, including a four-pitch third inning. Ross walked three and struck out three.
The TinCaps put two runs up in the third inning using both base hits and stolen bases. Alberth Martinez doubled home Corey Adamson to make it 3-1, and then Martinez advanced to third on a Jace Peterson single. With Peterson trying to steal second with two outs, Peoria (9-14) catcher Yaniel Cabezas tried for the out at second base. The throw was not in time and Martinez scampered home for the steal, pulling Fort Wayne to within one at 3-2. The Chiefs tacked on two more runs in the fourth, with the TinCaps scoring one of their own in that frame, and heading to the fifth, Peoria led 5-3. After a scoreless fifth, the Fort Wayne comeback began in the sixth.
Following a Travis Whitmore strikeout, Duanel Jones doubled down the left field line. Austin Hedges followed with a double of his own, making it a 5-4 ballgame as Jones crossed home. Hedges was the last batter that Peoria starter Jose Rosario faced. The righty was followed by Austin Reed (0-2). Reed retired Zach Kometani on a groundout to short, which moved Hedges to third. Then, with Corey Adamson at the plate, Reed tossed a wild pitch, allowing Hedges to score and tie the game at five. Adamson doubled, and was plated on an Alberth Martinez single to right. The TinCaps took a 6-5 lead which they would not relinquish.
Martinez finished the game 2-3 with two runs batted in, and the bullpen trio of Johnny Barbato (3-0), Daniel Cropper and Matt Stites (Save, 2) worked four hitless, scoreless innings for the second time in three nights.
Game two of the three-game series has righty Matt Wisler scheduled to pitch for Fort Wayne against Peoria right-hander Ben Wells. First pitch on Sunday is scheduled for 3:05 PM at Parkview Field.
