Peoria Chiefs News Release
Fort Wayne, IN - The Peoria Chiefs let leads of 3-0 and 5-2 slip away Saturday night in a 6-5 loss to the Fort Wayne TinCaps in game one of a three game series. The loss drops the Chiefs to 9-14 on the season and 1-3 on their current 13-game roadtrip.
The Chiefs came out swinging against Joe Ross in the first inning and built a 3-0 lead. Zeke DeVoss started the game with a single to right and moved to second on a bunt single by Pin-Chieh Chen. Wes Darvill loaded the bases with a single to shallow left to extend his hit streak to 12 games. Paul Hoilman put the Chiefs on 2-0 when he slammed a double off the left-field wall. After a pair of outs, Taiwan Easterling made it 3-0 with a single to third before he was caught stealing second to end the frame.
Chiefs' starter Jose Rosario retired the first seven TinCaps he faced before walking Cody Adamson with one out in the third. Alberth Martinez doubled to left as Adamson scored and Jace Peterson singled to put runners on the corners. Rosario struck out Justin Miller before Peterson broke for second and Martinez stole home on the throw. With the Chiefs up 3-2, Rosario escaped the inning with runners on the corners.
Peoria grabbed those runs back in the top of the fourth against Ross. Easterling led off with a single to left and stole second base. With one out, Eduardo Gonzalez doubled to left and went to third on the throw home as Easterling scored for a 4-2 Chiefs lead. DeVoss made it 5-2 with a sacrifice fly to right as the Chiefs regained the three run lead.
Fort Wayne came right back in the bottom of the inning as Duanel Jones led off with a double to right. With one down Zach Kometani doubled to left to score Jones and cut the Chiefs lead to 5-3
The Chiefs kept the two run lead into the sixth when Rosario ran into trouble. With one down, Jones collected his second double of the game with a hit to left. Austin Hedges followed with a double of his own as Jones scored to cut the Chiefs lead to 5-4. Austin Reed relieved Rosario and Hedges moved to third on a ground out to shortstop. A wild pitch tied the game and Adamson doubled to center on a ball deflected by Marco Hernandez diving up the middle. Martinez singled to right and Adamson scored on the throw to put the TinCaps on top 6-5. The Chiefs didn't get a base runner over the final three innings against the TinCaps bullpen.
Rosario allowed five runs on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings of work while striking out five and walking two in the no-decision. Reed (0-2) allowed one run on two hits over 1 2/3 innings. He walked one and threw a wild pitch. Yao-Lin Wang threw one shutout, hitless inning with a strikeout.
Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Taiwan Easterling (CF) - Easterling singled twice, stole two bases, scored and run and drove in a run. He finished 2-for-4 and saved a run with a diving catch in center field.
