
Kernels Use Long Balls to Down Hawks in Series Finale

The South Bend Silver Hawks (13-9) six-game winning streak came to an end Saturday as they fell to the Cedar Rapids Kernels 10-3 in the final game of a three-game series. Gary Mitchell and Andy Workman each hit home runs for Kernels, who salvaged a game in the three-game series.
Jeff Shields(0-3) got hit with the loss for the Hawks, allowing eight runs - seven earned - on 12 hits over four innings. The right-hander did not walk anybody and notched a strikeout. Left-hander Michael Johnson (1-3) threw four innings out of the Kernels bullpen and got the win, allowing just one earned run on one hit with three strikeouts.
Right-hander Michael Clevinger started for Cedar Rapids, and went three innings, surrendering two earned runs on two hits with four walks and five strikeouts.
The Kernels broke the game open with a five-run fifth inning, three of which came on an opposite field home run from Mitchell. The Kernels outhit the Hawks 14-4.
The Hawks fell behind 4-0 before scoring two runs in the third inning on an RBI double from Gerson Montilla. Marc Bourgeois hit a sacrifice fly to make it 4-2.
The Kernels added a run in the third and five more in that big fifth inning to go up 10-2.
Bobby Stone cut it to 10-3 with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.
Shields started the fifth inning but allowed three straight singles and gave way to Taylor Siemens, who worked three innings and allowed two runs - one earned - with three strikeouts.
Tom Belza extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a single in the third inning. Ender Inciarte went 0-for-4 and saw his nine-game streak come to a close.
Righty Kable Hogben tossed a scoreless eighth inning out of the Hawks bullpen.
The Silver Hawks road trip continues Sunday as they begin a three-game series with the Quad Cities River Bandits at 3:00 p.m. EST. Left-hander John Pedrotty (1-0, 2.95) gets the start for the Hawks and will be opposed by southpaw Dail Villanueva (1-1, 4.67).
