Kane County Cougars News Release
MIDLAND, Mich. - A 13-hit performance wasn't enough for the Great Lakes Loons on Saturday afternoon at Dow Diamond as the Kane County Cougars held them off for a 3-2 victory to open a three-game series.
A fast start broke the Cougars (11-12) out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Justin Trapp walked to start the ballgame and advanced one base each on singles from Michael Antonio and Jorge Bonifacio. Orlando Calixte's sac fly drew Trapp to the dish while Antonio scored on a Tim Ferguson single. Jin-Ho Shin walked with the bases full to bring in Bonifacio, giving the Cougars a three-run lead.
Kellen Moen (1-1) made the early work stick for five innings as he scattered five singles and struck out six. Mike Giovenco replaced Moen and allowed the Loons (11-12) to draw closer with Joe Winker doubling home Kevin Taylor in the seventh. James Baldwin scored on a base hit by Devin Shines against Matt Ridings to make it 3-2.
After Ridings worked a scoreless eighth, Jonathan Dooley (S, 1) entered for the ninth inning and promptly coughed up a lead-off single to Jesus Arredondo. A wild pitch moved Arredondo to second and an error got him to third. He stayed at third base as Winker flied to left and Shines grounded to second to end the contest.
The Cougars remain on the road Sunday afternoon when they take on the Loons at Dow Diamond with a 1:05 first pitch. Right-hander Brooks Pounders (0-0) starts for the Cougars against fellow righty Gustavo Gomez (2-1).
