Lake County Captains News Release
(FORT WAYNE, IN) - The Lake County Captains (41-37) came up just short against the Fort Wayne TinCaps (30-48) 5-4, despite ten hits and three from Alexfri Planez on a breezy Friday evening at Parkview Field.
Lake County starter Mason Hickman worked into trouble in the four innings he pitched.
In the first, the TinCaps loaded the bases, but the right-hander ended the frame with a strikeout. Following a leadoff single by Jarryd Dale who stole second and moved to third after an errant throw in the second, Hickman would get three straight punch outs.
In the bottom of the third, Fort Wayne finally broke through. Brandon Valenzuela smacked a two-run homer, over the right-center field fence, his second this season off Hickman to make it 2-0.
The Captains offense was held to one base runner through the first three innings, an Alexfri Planez single in the first.
In the bottom of the fourth, Lake County cut the lead in half. Planez reached on a single, Petey Halpin walked and then with two outs Gabriel Rodriguez chopped a ball in between the shortstop and third baseman to bring Planez across the plate.
Fort Wayne added more cushion in the fourth. A fielder's choice scored run number three and a sacrifice fly plated run number four. Jack DeGroat entered and finished the inning forcing a groundout.
The Captains cut the deficit to one again in the fifth. Lake County strung together three straight hits, an Angel Martinez single and Joe Naranjo double to right-center field. With two runners on and an 0-2 count, Planez connected for his third hit, a two-run double down the right-field line, making the score 4-3.
In the seventh, the Captains knotted up the game at four. Petey Halpin with two outs singled on the eighth pitch of his at-bat and was followed up by Johnathan Rodriguez who hammered a ball off the right field wall. Halpin came home from first and Rodriguez was thrown out at third, trying to move closer to scoring.
The TinCaps took the lead once again, with an RBI single off Jaime Arias. Arias collected three strikeouts in that inning, to escape further damage.
Lake County offensively only had one baserunner reach in the final two innings and went down 1-2-3 in the ninth.
The Captains and TinCaps will play a twin bill tomorrow Saturday July 9th in Fort Wayne. First pitch of game one is 5:35 p.m.
