Peoria Chiefs News Release

PEORIA, IL - For the second night in a row the Chiefs received a dynamite pitching performance, this time headlined by Austin Love who worked seven shutout innings. The fine effort secured the Chiefs second consecutive win over the Sky Carp by a 4-0 score on Friday night.

Drew VerHagen was slotted in for his second rehab appearance of the week, and he was able to carve his way around a pair of Beloit baserunners to work a scoreless frame. The right-hander threw 23 pitches, 17 for strikes. He is tentatively expected to make a third and final rehab appearance on Sunday.

Peoria got the scoring started offensively in the bottom of the second with an RBI groundout from Noah Mendlinger on the back of a leadoff single and a couple of walks. The following inning, the Chiefs doubled their lead when Jacob Buchberger continued his hot streak, driving in Todd Lott to make it a 2-0 lead.

After a scoreless fourth, a double from Lott set the table for LJ Jones who roped a base hit into left field to bring home another run. The Chiefs led 3-0 after five frames, but they weren't finished. With two outs in the sixth and a man in scoring position, Tommy Jew launched a double down the line in left to score a fourth run for the Chiefs and push it to a 4-0 game.

Four runs would be more than enough support for the pitching staff, as Austin Love, who was originally scheduled as tonight's starter, came on in relief of VerHagen and took the reins for the next seven frames. Love sparkled throughout his outing and scattered just a pair of base runners while fanning seven hitters, three shy of a season-high mark.

Levi Prater was the third and final man out of the bullpen. A 6-4-3 double play helped seal the deal on Peoria's fourth shutout win of the year.

The series continues Saturday as the Chiefs look to make it three in a row against the Beloit Sky Carp. Right-hander Zane Mills, who tied his career high with seven strikeouts in his last start, takes the ball for Peoria. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
