Lake County Captains News Release

(FORT WAYNE, IN) - The Lake County Captains (41-36) and Fort Wayne TinCaps (29-48) over four hours and 15 minutes combined for 21 runs and 26 hits in a true display of survival of the fittest. Lake County bested Fort Wayne 11-10 after 13 innings on a sunny and cool Thursday evening at Parkview Field.

Lake County's starter Aaron Davenport through the first four innings didn't permit a run. The TinCaps produced only two hits and struck out four times.

In their first five innings offensively, the Captains scored eight runs. The top of the third saw five runs, a bases loaded single from Petey Halpin and a grand slam from Johnathan Rodriguez. The grand slam was the seventh from Lake County in the 2022 season.

The Captains grew their lead to 8-0, after two home runs in the fifth. Alexfri Planez lead off the inning with a solo shot, his tenth this season and seventh in his last 18 games and Aaron Bracho delivered a two-run blast.

In the bottom of the fifth, fortune finally went Fort Wayne's way. Following two walks and a double, that loaded the bases Robert Hassell III slugged a two-run double off the left field wall. Raymond Burgos entered on and ended the threat, leaving three on base after a flyout.

Angel Martinez led off the sixth, with a solo homer, on the eleventh pitch of an at-bat against Nick Twaits. It made the score 9-2, but the Captains wouldn't score again until the eleventh inning.

After a TinCaps RBI double in the bottom of the sixth to make it 9-3, Matt Turner entered in the seventh and forced a 6-4-3 double play en-route to a scoreless frame. Everything changed in the bottom of the eighth as Fort Wayne would post six runs to tie the game.

The inning would begin with a single and two walks followed by two straight singles to bring it to a three-run deficit. The top of the Fort Wayne order knotted up the score as Max Ferguson's sacrifice fly made it 9-7 and then Robert Hassell III slugged an opposite field two-run blast for the equalizer. Turner began the inning, Trey Benton ended it, after allowing the homer.

The Captains went down 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth, the TinCaps had a chance to win it in the ninth inning. With one one recorded, Matthew Acosta doubled and then a walk put two runners on which brought on Davis Sharpe. Sharpe would force a flyout and then facing the next batter, Acosta tried to sneak home after a return throw from behind the plate, the right-hander noticed, fired home and Mike Amditis applied the tag to push the game to extras.

Alexfri Planez would be retired twice in extras with the bases loaded. In the tenth, he went down on strikes and in the twelfth with a groundball to third. Before tonight, Planez was 4-4 with two grand slams and 12 runs batted in with the bases loaded.

Fort Wayne would have three batters strikeout in the tenth and in the twelfth with the potential winning run at third, a line drive off the bat of Adam Kerner was caught by Angel Martinez at short who stepped on third, an unassisted inning ender.

Both teams scored one run in the eleventh. Lake County took the lead on a Milan Tolentino RBI single and the TinCaps got a sacrifice fly to right field off the bat of Jarryd Dale to deadlock it once more.

The game was 10-10 entering the thirteenth inning. With Planez starting on second Petey Halpin doubled to right field to give the Captains their second advantage during the free baseball. A 5-4-3 double play halted Lake County from scoring more.

In the bottom of the twelfth, Alaska Abney came in for Lake County replacing Davis Sharpe after 3.2 innings. Robert Hassell III was intentionally walked to set up runners on the corners with one out. Lucas Dunn stepped in and grounded into his second 6-4-3 double play of the night to end the game.

Following some shut eye, the Captains and TinCaps will play tomorrow Friday July 8th. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.

Coverage of the game can be found on WJCU.org/Captains and the MiLB First Pitch app.
