FRIDAY NIGHT: The TinCaps lost to the Cougars, 6-5, in 12 innings. It was Fort Wayne's longest game of the season by innings. The 'Caps led 4-0 at the stretch. Aaron Leasher went 7 innings, without allowing an earned run, for the longest start of the season by a TinCaps pitcher. Esteury Ruiz hit a 2-out, 2-run single in the second that made it 3-0. In the fourth he added a 2-out, RBI double. But Kane County rallied with 3 in the last of the ninth. Neither side scored in the 10th, and then both scored a run in the 11th, before the Cougs broke through in the 12th.
FRANCHISE RECORD: Defensively, the TinCaps set a franchise record by turning 6 double plays on Friday. According to team records, the previous high for double plays turned in a game was 5 (July 17, 2006 vs. Burlington). Fort Wayne's lineup that day included future major leaguers Will Venable in left field, Kyle Blanks at first base, and David Freese, who was involved in 1 of the DPs, at third.
MIDWEST LEAGUE RECORD: Shortstop Gabriel Arias was involved in turning all 6 double plays for the TinCaps on Friday. According to the Midwest League record book, Arias tied the record for most double plays turned in a game by an individual. Previously, 4 different first baseman were involved in 6 double plays in a game, with the most recent instance occurring in 1996. The only other shortstop to be involved in 6 double plays in a game was Donnie Sadler, who'd spent parts of 8 years in the bigs, for the Michigan Battle Cats (Red Sox) on April 7, 1995, in an 18-inning game. Though Friday night's game went 12 innings, the 6 double plays were all turned in the first 9 innings.
DOUBLE PLAYS RUNDOWN:
- 2nd Inn. - Yan Sanchez - 6-3
- 3rd Inn. - Tim Susnara - 6-3
- 5th Inn. - Sanchez - 1-6-3
- 6th Inn. - Susnara - 4-6-3
- 8th Inn. - Luis Basabe - P6-3
- 9th Inn. - Ernie De La Trinidad - 4-6-3
A.C. MEMORIES: Friday night's game reminded TinCaps manager Anthony Contreras of a game he played in during his rookie season in 2005. On July 19, 2005, Contreras and the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (Giants) turned 6 double plays against the Yakima Bears (Diamondbacks). Contreras, who was playing shortstop, was involved in 5 groundball double plays. Though not in the mix on any of the DPs, the Volcanoes third baseman was Pablo Sandoval.
260 TO THE SHOW: 2012-13 TinCaps pitcher Justin Hancock made his MLB debut on Wednesday as a reliever for the Cubs at Wrigley Field against the Marlins. The 27-year-old righty is from Defiance, Ohio (which is about 45 miles northwest of Parkview Field). Hancock became the 161st former Fort Wayne Wizard or TinCap to reach the bigs. Others to debut so far this season with the Padres: LHP Joey Luchessi (2016) and LHP Eric Lauer (2016).
PITCHING NINJA: Nick Margevicius has been one of the best pitchers in the Midwest League this year. Here are the stats to back it up, and where he ranks in the league: 44 strikeouts (tied 2nd)... 2.81 ERA (11th)... 2.21 FIP (2nd)... 12.38 K/9 (3rd)... 6.29 K/BB (4th)... 31.7 K% (4th)... 5% BB% (tied 6th)... 26% K-BB% (4th)... 14.8% Swinging Strike % (7th).
