Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
Davenport, IA - The Lake County Captains scored three runs in the inning immediately following a 46-minute rain delay to earn a 5-3 comeback victory over the Quad Cities River Bandits on Saturday night at Modern Woodmen Park. The Captains took two of the three games in the series.
The River Bandits grabbed the lead in the bottom of the second inning. Bryan De La Cruz led off the frame with a line drive into the right center gap that resulted in a triple. Jake Adams followed with a deep fly ball to center field that was able to elude the grasp of Lake County's Todd Isaacs for another triple. De La Cruz scored on the play and the Bandits had a 1-0 lead. With two outs in the inning, Colton Shaver won a battle with pitcher Kirk McCarty and lined an RBI single to center that scored Adams and made it 2-0.
Colton Shaver extended the advantage with a home run that led off the fifth inning. The opposite field shot extended the advantage to 3-0 and was the designated hitter's second of the season.
After being unable to solve River Bandits starting pitcher Patrick Sandoval, Lake County broke through in reliever Cesar Rosado's first inning. Ernie Clement opened the inning with single into right field. Jorma Rodriguez followed with a double that moved two into scoring position with no outs. Nolan Jones took advantage with a bouncer up the middle that scored both runners and cut the Bandits lead to 3-2.
At the conclusion of the seventh inning, the skies opened up and a heavy rain began to fall. The tarp was placed on the field and the teams waited out a 46-minute rain delay. When the game resumed, Robert Corniel had replaced Rosado on the mound. Corniel allowed a leadoff infield single to Rodriguez and a double to Jones in the ensuing at bat. With the infield drawn in, Jonathan Laureano grounded a base hit up the middle to score both runners and give Lake County a 4-3 lead. Before the inning ended, Isaacs added a run-scoring single that pushed the lead to 5-3.
Sandoval, the reigning Midwest League Pitcher of the Week, was stellar once again with 5.0 scoreless innings during which he allowed only one hit and two walks to go with seven strikeouts. Rosado worked 2.0 innings and allowed two runs on three hits while striking out three. Corniel took the loss after surrendering three runs on four hits in 0.2 innings. Carlos Sanabria tossed 1.1 innings and allowed one hit, striking out a pair.
The River Bandits matched the Captains with 10 hits. Jake Meyers, Jonathan Arauz, Adams, and Shaver all had two. Shaver drove in two of the Bandits three runs.
The River Bandits (19-15) will enjoy a day off on Sunday before opening up a five-game series on the road against the Cedar Rapids Kernels Monday night at 6:35 p.m. RHP Tyler Ivey (1-2, 3.71) will take the ball in the series opener.
All River Bandits games are broadcast on 1170 K-BOB and TuneIn Radio. Home games are also available with video on MiLB.TV.
