ALUMNI NEWS: For a 2nd night in a row, a recent TinCap made his MLB debut for the Padres on the mound at Petco Park. After Walker Lockett started against the Reds on Friday, lefty José Castillo came out of the bullpen on Saturday. Castillo struck out the side in order in the 8th. That included All-Star Joey Votto who led off. Castillo is the 165th former Fort Wayne Wizard / TinCap to make The Show. Earlier this week, Dustin Peterson, who was with Fort Wayne throughout '14, also joined that club with Atlanta. See the next page for more alumni news.
BIGGEST COMEBACK SINCE: The TinCaps overcame a 6-0 deficit to win 7-6 on Friday. The 'Caps hadn't overcome a deficit of more than 5 runs to win a game since Aug. 7, 2014, when Fort Wayne erased an 11-2 deficit against the Lake County Captains in an eventual 12-11 win in 10 innings. Fernando Perez hit a game-tying grand slam in the 8th. The TinCaps had major leaguers Trea Turner (Nationals), Franmil Reyes (Padres), and Dustin Peterson (Braves) in the lineup that night, plus Jake Bauers (Rays, Triple-A Durham) and Josh VanMeter (Reds, Triple-A Louisville). Lake County had Clint Frazier (Yankees, Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre).
BRUSH WITH FAME: ESPN anchor/host Adnan Virk tweeted a photo of himself Saturday wearing a TinCaps hat managing his young son's little league team. The TinCaps of the West Hartford Youth Baseball League won first place in the regular season. The WHYBL postseason begins today.
DONATION: Along with their parent club, the Padres, the TinCaps are donating $1,000 to provide bats and helmets to the Little League Challenger Division of Fort Wayne. The Challenger Baseball League is an adaptive baseball program for individuals with physical and intellectual challenges (ages 4-22). Johnny TinCap and members from the front office staff a delivering the donation today at Hamilton Park/Northcrest Little League.
BURGEONING BULLPEN: TinCaps relievers have posted a 3-something ERA over their last 35 games. In this time, the 'pen has been led by Travis Radke, Caleb Boushley, Evan Miller, Jordan Guerrero, and Ben Sheckler. Through the first 19 games of the year, the bullpen had a 7.47 ERA.
FEELING EXTRA: The TinCaps have 31 extra-base hits over their last 9 games. Fort Wayne matched a season high with 7 extra-base hits on May 24 @ West Michigan and again on May 26 @ Lansing. (The team also tallied 7 XBHs on April 13 @ Bowling Green.) Over their last 9, the 'Caps have hit 7 triples, 19 doubles, and 5 home runs.
MILLER TIME: TinCaps reliever Evan Miller earned his 1st save as a TinCap on Saturday. The LaPorte, Ind., native who went to IPFW has posted a 0.40 ERA across 13 outings this year (22.2 IP). Miller has had 7 consecutive scoreless appearances dating to May 11 when he allowed an unearned run @ Kane County in extras innings.
