South Bend Cubs News Release

South Bend, IN: The South Bend Cubs fell behind early on in their series finale rubber match against the Lake County Captains on Sunday afternoon by trailing 6-2 in the 4th inning. In good timing, the Cubs bats came alive in the middle three frames as they scored 12 combined runs. They cruised for the rest of the game and triumphed over Lake County by a final of 14-7.

With the victory on Sunday, the Cubs take the three game series by winning the final two games at Four Winds Field. Dating back to their previous homestand versus the West Michigan Whitecaps, South Bend has now won three straight series after winning a three game set at Great Lakes earlier in the week.

The win on Sunday did not come easy for the Cubs. It seemed like the Captains had an answer for everything the Cubs threw at them, and vice-versa. After the Cubs hit two home runs in their 3-0 win last night, Lake County answered with three of their own today.

The Cubs responded with two more home runs today. First baseman Jared Young went yard in the bottom of the 1st inning to deep center field over the bridge towards The Ivy at Berlin Place. Young hit a two run homer yesterday and went deep in back-to-back at bats with the bomb for the Cubs first run.

It was the bottom of the 5th inning that put the game out of reach, however. Batting around the entire lineup in the inning, the Cubs scored eight total runs, with five of them being driven in by catcher Michael Cruz . Miguel Amaya led off the inning with a single up the middle, then Cruz hit a no-doubter to bring them both home.

Cruz would come up again later in the inning, this time with the bases loaded. The Lake County outfield was shifted towards right center field. Beating the shift, Cruz hit a liner down the left field line, clearing the bases and picking up three more RBI. The 5 RBI mark is a new career high for Cruz. Also setting a career high in RBI in the game was Zach Davis, who drove in three of his own.

The South Bend bullpen continues to shine, but now with two new additions. Both Jeffrey Passantino and Garrett Kelly made their Cubs debut on Sunday. In a combined 4.2 innings, the two right handers gave up just a run and struck out four. Passantino earned the win in his Midwest League debut.

Next up for South Bend is a three game series at Four Winds Field against the Fort Wayne TinCaps. After an off day tomorrow, the Cubs will have an opportunity to get back to .500 in the Fort Wayne series with their record now sitting at 26-29.
