SATURDAY NIGHT: The TinCaps topped Lansing, 3-1. Luis Patiño pitched 5.2 scoreless innings, while Owen Miller led the way at the plate with 4 hits. The 'Caps scored once in the second (run in on wild pitch) and twice in the third (2-run Kelvin Melean single). Lansing's only run came in the eighth.
HOT CAPS: Since being swept in a 3-game series by Lansing at Parkview Field (Aug. 4-6), the TinCaps have won 8 of their last 10, including a 6 in a row. This has matched Fort Wayne's longest winning streak of the season (the team also won 6 straight June 24-28). A TinCaps team hasn't had a longer winning streak since the 2015 squad won 10 in a row (Aug. 8-19).
ALL ROSY: Jeisson Rosario ranks tied for 5th in runs (73), 7th in walks (61), and 9th in OBP (.380). Looking to advanced stats, he's 8th in BB/K (0.68), 9th in BB% (13%), and tied for 9th in Swing & Miss % (8%). Rosario had a solid first half of the season (.269/.381/.322 with 7 extra-base hits in 56 games), but has been better since the break (.289/.378/.399 with 14 extra-base hits in 47G).
RUIZ RIGHTING SHIP: Entering last Sunday, Esteury Ruiz's OBP had fallen to .312, the lowest it had been since April 28. But over his last 5 games, Ruiz is 6-for-15 with a home run and 3 RBIs. He's walked as many times as he's struck out (twice each), and he has 4 stolen bases. Ruiz ranks 4th in the MWL in stolen bags for the year (41). He has the most stolen bases for a TinCap since Mallex Smith swiped 46 in the first half of 2014.
MILLER MASHING: In his first 10 games as a TinCap since making his debut on Aug. 8, Owen Miller has slashed .415/.432/.634 with 3 doubles, 2 homers, and 4 RBIs. The last time the 'Caps had a rookie shortstop join them in the second half of the season was in 2014 when Trea Turner posted a line of .450/.511/.600 in his first 10 games.
IN CONTROL: TinCaps pitchers have the lowest BB/9 ratio in the league (2.9) and also the best K/BB ratio (3.15).
SUWINSKI THRIVING: Over his last 17 games since July 31, Jack Suwinski has the 2nd highest OPS in the Midwest League at 1.031. Suwinski has slashed .344/.408/.623 with 5 doubles, 4 homers, and 16 RBIs in this range. On the year, however, Suwinski has not had much good fortune as his .272 BABIP ranks 6th lowest in the MWL.
ARI-SERIOUS?!: Gabriel Arias had a 21-game on-base streak end on Monday. Nevertheless, in 25 games since July 19 when that streak started, the 18-year-old has put up a slash line of .295/.398/.455 with 8 doubles, 2 homers, and 13 RBIs. (In 83 games prior, Arias was at .215/.273/.275.)
MELLY ON AGAINST LHP: In 21 at-bats against lefties in the MWL, Kelvin Melean has hit .429 with a homer and 3 doubles. (He's batting .244 in 90 Abs vs. RHP.) Earlier this year with High-A Lake Elsinore in the California League, Melean hit .533 against lefties in 30 at-bats (.207 vs. RHP in 145 ABs).
MWL LEFTIES OF THE YEAR: Osvaldo Hernandez has been named the Midwest League's Left-Handed Pitcher of the Year and Travis Radke (currently with Triple-A El Paso) is the MWL's Left-Handed Reliever of the Year.
BEST TOOLS: In a Baseball America survey of MWL managers, TinCaps lefty Nick Margevicius (now with High-A Lake Elsinore) earned "Best Control," while shortstop Gabriel Arias is considered to have the "Best Infield Arm" and center fielder Jeisson Rosario is the "Best Defensive Outfielder."
