About Last Game : Fort Wayne continued its improbable playoff quest on Thursday night with a 6-4 win over first-place West Michigan at Parkview Field in front of an electric crowd of 6,664 fans. Ronnie Richardson propelled the TinCaps to victory with a grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning.
A TinCaps Win Would : Sweep the Whitecaps... Be their fourth in a row, and fifth straight against West Michigan... Finish the season 39-31 at home.
Wild, Wild Midwest : With four regular season games remaining, the TinCaps are tied with Dayton for the Eastern Division Wild Card. The Dragons, though, hold the tiebreaker against Fort Wayne. Why? Well, they finished the regular season 6-6 against each other. It then comes down to run-differential and, there, the Dragons outscored the TinCaps 67-62. (Dayton won the final four meetings of the season by a combined score of 22-3.)
The Guy : Nick Schulz was "the guy" for the TinCaps in Tuesday's win as he went 5-for-5 with 6 RBI. Wednesday, it was John Nester who delivered the game-winning RBI in the eighth. And on Thursday, it was Ronnie Richardson who turned a 4-2 deficit into a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the seventh with a grand slam. Schulz, 23, went undrafted in 2013 and wasn't signed by San Diego until May. Nester, 25, was released by Oakland after the 2012 season and played in the independent Frontier League a year ago. Richardson, 24, wasn't with Fort Wayne to start the season and has platooned in the outfield while finding himself in six different spots in the order during the year. The grand slam was his fourth home run of the season, and third in August.
NEW Attendance Record Within Reach Tonight : If the TinCaps can draw 6,023 fans tonight, the franchise will set a new regular season attendance record. The current record for regular season attendance is 404,932 (2010).
NEW Fort Wayne Team Home Run Record : The 2014 TinCaps have hit 99 home runs - more than any team in Fort Wayne franchise history dating back to 1993. The previous season high was 97 (2009).
NEW Fort Wayne Individual RBI Record : With a solo home run Thursday, Fernando Perez drove in his 92nd run of the season to set a new franchise record for most RBIs in a season. The previous high of 91 was set by current Padres outfielder Will Venable in 2006 with the Wizards.
