Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - The Kernels fell 6-1 to Kane County in the regular season home-finale Friday night. With one out in the bottom of the sixth, the game was officially called due to unfavorable playing conditions from heavy rain. The Cougars tallied runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth and hit two home runs from the plate to take the three-game series. Mitch Garver collected his 16th home run of the season in the losing effort while Matt Bats tossed two scoreless, hitless frames in his fifth start for the Kernels.
Garver powered the Kernels in front in the bottom of the second with a leadoff solo home run over the left field wall. Garver's 16th long ball of the season made it a 1-0 score after two frames.
Matt Bats took a no-decision and finished his fifth start for Cedar Rapids after two innings of shutout baseball. Bats tallied two strikeouts and did not allow a hit or a base runner in his two frames of action.
Jared Wilson took over to begin the third and exited after 2 2/3 innings on the mound. Wilson (3-4) took the loss and surrendered five runs, three earned, on five hits while walking one and striking out four.
Kane County responded in the top of the fourth with two runs and two hits. Mark Zagunis became the Cougars' first base runner of the evening on a fielding error to begin the inning, and Chesny Young singled in the next at-bat to record the team's first hit. Jeimer Candelario later drove in Zagunis with a single into right field to tie the game. Then Victor Caratini drove in Young with a sacrifice fly to make it a 2-1 lead.
The Cougars extended the advantage to 5-1 in the top of the fifth with two home runs. Trey Martin took the 1-0 pitch over the wall in left with one down to tally the inning's first run. Later in the frame, Candelario knocked in Young with a two-out two-run homer to right field to make it a four-run lead. Brandon Bixler then took the mound to record the final out for the Kernels defensively in fifth.
Trey Martin made it a 6-1 score for Kane County in the top of the sixth with an RBI single that brought Carlos Penalver across the plate.
Bixler allowed one run on two hits during his 1 1/3 inning tenure on the evening out of the bullpen.
Jonathan Martinez (11-5) picked up the win in the start for the Cougars and recorded the lone out in the bottom of the sixth before the game was officially called. The starter yielded one run on three total hits over the span of 5 2/3 innings pitched to secure the 6-1 final score.
