Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

DAVENPORT, Iowa - The Quad Cities River Bandits went hitless until the sixth inning of Friday's doubleheader before dropping a 1-0, seven-inning final in Game 1, but they rallied from a 3-0 deficit for a 6-4, seven-inning win in Game 2 that kept them mathematically alive in the second-half playoff race in front of a home finale crowd of 7,245 at Modern Woodmen Park.

Quad Cities (33-34 second half, 68-68 overall) moved within two games of Wisconsin (35-32) for the final second-half playoff spot in the Western Division. Peoria (33-33) won the first game of its Friday doubleheader to move within a game and a half of Wisconsin. Quad Cities must finish ahead of both Wisconsin and Peoria to make the playoffs for a second straight year. A win by Wisconsin in any of its three remaining games in Beloit, or a loss by Quad Cities in any of its three games in Burlington will eliminate the River Bandits.

In Game 1, Clinton right-hander Edwin Diaz (6-8) pitched five no-hit innings after walking the first three batters he faced. Second baseman Marc Wik was caught trying to steal second base after his leadoff walk, and Diaz struck out first baseman A.J. Reed and third baseman J.D. Davis to end the first inning and begin a stretch in which Diaz retired 14 batters in order - including nine on strikeouts.

River Bandits right-hander Adrian Houser (5-6) shut out Clinton (29-38, 59-76) for the first five innings, scattering three hits. In the sixth inning of a scoreless Game 1, LumberKings third baseman Joe DeCarlo hit a one-out single, went to second on a groundout and scored on a two-out double to left-center field by left fielder Wilton Martinez. Houser went six innings and allowed one earned run in a start for the first time since July 21. He matched a season high with eight strikeouts, allowing five hits and hitting two hit batters without a walk.

After Diaz, left-hander Paul Fry began the sixth inning and walked Wik with one out. Bottger then drove his team's first and only Game 1 hit for a double that rolled to the right-field fence, but right fielder Tyler O'Neill and first baseman Jeff Zimmerman completed a relay to catcher Luke Guarnaccia to tag out Wik. With Bottger at third base, right-hander Emilio Pagan got first baseman Chase McDonald to pop out to end the inning. Pagan worked around a two-out walk in the seventh inning to pick up his 15th save and fourth against Quad Cities.

In Game 2, River Bandits right-hander Andrew Thurman (7-9) began the game by allowing consecutive singles to center fielder Aaron Barbosa and third baseman Martin Peguero. With two outs, DeCarlo hit a two-run double down the right-field line and scored on second baseman Nelson Ward's RBI single to right field for a 3-0 Clinton lead. After giving up four hits to the first six batters, Thurman allowed only two walks and one hit in the rest of his five-inning start, which gave him wins in consecutive outings for the first time this season.

LumberKings left-hander Eddie Campbell (9-9) retired six of the first seven batters he faced, but he allowed a third-inning, one-out bunt single by center fielder Bobby Boyd, who came around to score on Campbell's wild pickoff throw. Wik walked and came in to score on a popup single behind first base by McDonald to make it 3-2. In the fourth inning, Reed hit a leadoff double, catcher Brett Booth hit a game-tying double, and left fielder Brauly Mejia hit a single. Boyd then brought in the go-ahead run on a squeeze bunt for a 4-3 lead. In the fifth inning, Wik drew a leadoff walk and stole second base. Bottger, McDonald and Reed each singled, with the last two plating runs for a 6-3 edge. Clinton scored once in the sixth inning against right-hander Jandel Gustave, who worked two innings for his second save this season.

Quad Cities opens its final regular season series at 6:30 p.m. Saturday in Burlington. River Bandits left-hander Blaine Sims (3-4) is scheduled to face right-hander Harrison Cooney (9-7) and the playoff-bound Bees in the series opener.
