Kane County Cougars News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Cougars became the first team in franchise history to grab 90 victories with a 6-1 rain shortened win over Cedar Rapids on Friday evening. The Cougars (45-22, 90-47) put together six unanswered runs to defeat the Kernels (41-26, 72-65) at Perfect Game Field.
The Cougars grabbed their first lead of the game with an RBI hit from Yasiel Balaguert and a sacrifice fly from Victor Caratini in the fourth inning. Trey Martin and Jeimer Candelario each homered in the fifth frame with monster shots over the left and right field walls. Martin's blast came as a solo shot that cleared the left field bleachers. Candelario connected on a two-run bomb over the right field wall that knocked Jared Wilson (3-4) out of the ballgame.
Jonathan Martinez (11-5) provided solid pitching with five and one-third innings of one run baseball. The Kernels grabbed one run on three hits in the second frame. Other than the run scoring inning, Martinez allowed one hit and one walk.
The Cougars will wrap up their regular season with a three-game series against the Peoria Chiefs at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. Daury Torrez (11-6, 2.71) will take the mound for the Cougars against Peoria's Alex Reyes (6-7, 3.77). First pitch on Saturday is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. For tickets call 630-232-8811.
