Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
Fort Wayne TinCaps (17-22, 47-61 ) @ West Michigan Whitecaps(26-13, 67-42)
RHP Ronald Herrera (5-6, 4.11) vs. RHP Austin Kubitza (9-1, 2.59)
Friday, August 1, 2014 - Comstock Park, Michigan - First Pitch 7:00 p.m. - Game 109
About Last Game : For the second time in a week, the TinCaps overcame a 4-0 deficit. However, unlike Monday at home against Wisconsin when Fort Wayne scored six unanswered in a 6-4 win, the TinCaps lost to Great Lakes, 5-4, in 13 innings Thursday. Great Lakes won the game when Delvis Morales scored from third base with two outs on a wild pitch by Jason Jester.
A TinCaps Win Would : Be their 7th in their last 9... Improve their record to 13-6 in their last 19 since a 13-game losing streak... Be the 3rd consecutive series opener they've won... Avoid consecutive losses... End a 3-game losing streak against the Whitecaps.
Burgeoning Bullpen : Before conceding a run with 2 outs in the bottom of the 13th inning Thursday, the TinCaps bullpen had thrown 14 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings. All 8 relievers in the pen contributed to the stretch, which has lowered the Fort Wayne bullpen's season ERA to 4.02 - the lowest it's been since the first week of the season.
Reina's Reign : Adolfo Reina is back at the ballpark he called home for the majority of the 2013 season. The catcher from Panama was signed by the Tigers in 2008 and played in 55 games for the Whitecaps a year ago. The Padres claimed Reina during the offseason in the Rule 5 Draft. It's proven to be a nice addition for the TinCaps. After not making the roster out of spring training, Reina has hit .260 in 44 games with 8 HR (5 in July) and 27 RBI. The 24-year-old vaulted his most recent homer Thursday at Great Lakes, a 2-run home that came with Fort Wayne behind 4-0 in the 6th. Reina later tied the game, 4-4, with a double in the 8th. His power comes after he went without a longball in 2013. In fact, Reina went 124 games without a home between Aug. 25, 2012 and May 31 of this year when he beat West Michigan with a walk-off blast. He has 3 homers against his old team this season.
National Recognition : The latest Baseball America "Hot Sheet" released Friday, recognizing the hottest prospects in the minors from July 25-31, has Trea Turner ranked No. 1. It's well deserved as the shortstop had a slash line of .517 / .588 / .724 (15-for-29) with 6 R, 3 2B, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 5 BB, and 3 SB. Meanwhile, Fort Wayne's shortstop from opening day, Franchy Cordero, who is now with Short-Season A Eugene, made the list's honorable mention section. Joe Ross, a starting pitcher with the TinCaps in 2012 and 2013, was rated No. 9 hottest for his recent performances for Double-A San Antonio.
