Rivas roundtripper drops Lugs, 3-1

MIDLAND, Mich. - Webster Rivas belted a three-run homer and the Great Lakes Loons (19-21, 53-57) handed the Lansing Lugnuts (18-22, 50-59) their fourth consecutive loss, 3-1, opening a three-game series on Friday night at Dow Diamond.

The Lugnuts outhit the Loons, 7-5, but were held to 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position.

Lansing fired first with a solo home run by Mitch Nay in the top of the fourth, his third home run of the year.

After a pair of walks by Lansing starter Starlyn Suriel (Loss, 0-1) in the bottom half of the inning, Great Lakes catcher Webster Rivas hit a two-out, three-run home run to put the Loons ahead.

In his second start with the Lugnuts, Suriel worked five innings, allowing three runs on four hits with three walks and five strikeouts.

Great Lakes starting pitcher Zachary Bird (Win, 5-12) allowed one run in 5.1 innings on four hits with two walks and six strikeouts.

The Lugnuts put the potential tying run on base with singles by D.J. Davis and Justin Atkinson in the ninth, but Great Lakes closer Victor Araujo (Save, 6) sat down Daniel Klein on strikes to secure the win.

The Lugnuts and Loons play the second game of the three-game series on Saturday night at Dow Diamond. Lefty Brent Powers (3-3, 5.25) starts on the mound for Lansing, countered by right-hander Victor Arano (4-5, 4.33).
