
Williams, Rattlers Shut Down Chiefs

BELOIT, WI- The Peoria Chiefs ran into a red-hot pitcher Friday night and a grand slam from Taylor Brennan led to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers winning 5-1 in the series opener. The loss drops the Chiefs to 21-19 in the half and 58-51 overall while the Rattlers improve to 23-17 and 59-50.
Ronald Castillo doubled for the Chiefs to start the top of the second but Taylor Williams retired the next three batters with Castillo stranded at second. Williams (8-1) would not allow another base runner through the seventh inning and departed with a career-high 11 strikeouts. He set down the first three batters faced and then 18 in a row after Castillo's double. Williams stuck out two batters in each of the third, fifth and seventh innings while striking out the side in the sixth as he lowered his ERA to 2.36.
Meanwhile Wisconsin turned one bad inning by Luis Perdomo and the Chiefs defense into a huge frame for a 5-0 lead. With one out in the second Rafael Neda reached on an error by Cesar Valera at second and Perdomo walked Omar Garcia. Jose Pena hit a ground ball to third by Michael Schulze's throw to second was late and the bases were loaded. Steven Halcomb walked for a 1-0 Rattlers lead and Brennan launched the next pitch out of the stadium for a 5-0 lead. The homer was the 12th of the season for Brennan and his second grand slam.
The Chiefs finally picked up another hit in the eighth when Steve Bean singled up the middle with two outs against reliever Chad Thompson. Thompson walked Vaughn Bryan with one out in the ninth and the Chiefs scored their only run of the game two batters later when Justin Ringo singled to right-center. Rowan Wick walked with two outs to load the bases but Valera flew out to center as the tying run to end the game.
Perdomo (2-2) took the loss allowing five runs on three hits over six innings. Four of the runs were earned and he walked a career-high five while striking out three. Zach Loraine allowed two hits and struck out a batter over two shutout innings.
