Timely Knocks Put Nuts in Win Column

Stockton, CA. - Clutch two-out hitting led the Modesto Nuts to their first win of the year in a 8-3 triumph over the Stockton Ports at Banner Island Ballpark on Friday night.

After the Ports (1-1) struck first in the second inning, the Nuts (1-1) came back with a two-out single by Wes Rogers to tie the game. Rogers finished with three hits and reached in all five plate appearances. Going back to Thursday night, Rogers has reached in seven consecutive trips to the plate. In the fourth, Collin Ferguson whacked a two-out solo homer to give the Nuts their first lead of the year.

Forrest Wall tacked on with a two-run single in the fifth to give the Nuts some breathing room against the Ports' starter Brett Graves (L, 0-1). Graves worked five innings and allowed four runs with five strikeouts.

Sam Howard worked around trouble in the third and fourth innings, while limiting the damage to just one run in the fifth despite allowing four hits, including two extra-base knocks, and having four errors committed behind him.

Troy Neiman (W, 1-0) tossed 2.2 innings with five strikeouts out of the 'pen in his 2016 debut.

Max White extended the Nuts lead in the eighth with a solo shot as part of a 3-for-3 day. Shane Hoelscher knocked a two-run homer in the ninth to extend the lead.

Game three of the year and of the season-opening four-game set against the Ports starts at 7:15 p.m. on Saturday night with Jon Gray making a rehab start for the Nuts.
