Timely Hits Remain Elusive as Bandits Drop Second Straight

Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

South Bend, Indiana - Despite out-hitting the Cubs 8-2 on Wednesday night, the Quad Cities River Bandits batted just 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position and stranded 12 baserunners as they fell to South Bend 4-3 at Four Winds Field.

After going hitless with men in scoring position (0-8) in Opening Day's 7-4 loss, Quad Cities looked to be heading in a new direction against Cubs' starter Chris Kachmar after Jeison Guzman led off the game with a single, a steal of second, and an advancement to third on catcher Bryce Windham's throwing error. But the subsequential pop out, strikeout, and ground out from the heart of the Bandits' order proved to be an early sign of things to come.

On the mound, the 2020 Draft's fourth overall pick, Asa Lacy, made his highly anticipated professional debut and showed an early flash of dominance by needing just 12 pitches, 11 for strikes, to strikeout the side in order in the bottom of the first.

In the second, another scoreless inning from the former Texas A&M Aggie allowed Michael Massey to give Quad Cities a 1-0 lead in the top of the third as Jeison Guzman eventually made it to the plate when a hard line drive bounced out of the glove of Cole Roederer in centerfield.

However, in the bottom of the third, South Bend got patient with the Bandits southpaw and worked five walks, including two with the bases loaded, to chase Lacy from the game and take a 4-1 lead with help from a Roederer RBI single and Bryce Windham's sacrifice fly.

Quad Cities threatened the cut into the lead in the fourth and fifth innings with two-out doubles off the bats of Jimmy Govern and Massey, but reliever Tanner Jesson-Dalton put an end to both rallies quickly with a flyball and a strikeout to end the frames.

Working early relief, lefthander Drew Parrish helped right the pitching ship for Quad Cities in his High-A debut, and allowed his offense another chance in the sixth as Vinnie Pasquantino's leadoff walk, despite being followed by consecutive strikeouts, turned into a pair of runs with Guzman singling in both Pasquantino and Govern who had reached on a single of his own two batters earlier.

Now trailing just 4-3, the River Bandits received another scoreless inning from Parrish in the seventh as he and Jonah Dipoto worked to end a Cubs two-out rally. Parrish, the former Florida State product, finished his 4.1 innings of work allowing no runs, just two base runners, and whiffing six.

In the final innings, a Q.C. spark in the eighth was extinguished with a scoreless and win earning outing from Brandon Hughes who worked 1.2 IP, before Burl Carraway (1) earned his first save of the season and needing just nine pitches to retire the visitors in order to seal the 4-3 victory in the ninth.

After lasting just 2.1 innings and allowing 4 earned, Lacy (0-1) took his first loss of the season, while Brandon Hughes (1-0) turned his first outing of the year into the win.

The Cubs will host the River Bandits for game three of the season-opening six-game series at 6:05 p.m. CT, with righty Zach Haake (0-0) making his first start of the season against the home squad's Max Bain (1-0) who toe the rubber for his first time in 2021.
