Timely Braves Hitting Leaves Tourists on the Short Side
July 7, 2019 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Asheville Tourists News Release
ROME - The starting rotation for the Rome Braves had their way with the Asheville Tourists over the last four days. Today it was Dilmer Mejia who chewed up seven innings and limited the Tourists to only one run. Asheville did manage to salvage a series split with a few wins earlier in the series despite dropping the finale to the Braves 4-1.
Rome used some timely hitting late in the game to build their lead. The Tourists scored the game's first run on back-to-back hits in the top of the fourth inning by Kyle Datres and Coco Montes. The Braves promptly tied the game in the bottom of the fourth with a run of their own.
Alfredo Garcia pitched well for the Tourists but in the sixth inning he issued a lead-off walk. After a pair of outs and a pair of stolen bases, Rome delivered a go-ahead two-out RBI double to take a 2-1 lead.
The Braves then added two more runs in the seventh inning on back-to-back two-out RBI hits to make it 4-1. Asheville only had two hits over the game's final five innings.
All four of Rome's starting pitchers worked at least seven innings during all four games of the series. The Tourists have seen one of their starting pitchers go seven innings a total of four times all season.
Next up for Asheville is a three-game home set against their Sally League rivals, the Greenville Drive. The series begins on Tuesday night after a league-wide off day Monday.
