Portland Timbers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Timbers have signed goalkeepers James Pantemis and Trey Muse, the club announced today. Both goalkeepers are set to join the Timbers through the 2025 season with club options for 2026.
"One of our main priorities this offseason was to recreate our goalkeeping group, and that work is well underway. We are excited to welcome both James and Trey to the Portland Timbers," said Timbers General Manager Ned Grabavoy. "Both players have good experience with upside and will help create healthy competition within this position as we move forward."
Pantemis, 26, joins Portland after spending six seasons with Eastern Conference side CF Montréal. Pantemis logged seven clean sheets in 34 regular-season appearances (34 starts) for Montréal. The Montreal, Quebec native registered 18 appearances in the 2021 season and 11 appearances in 2022, helping Montréal claim the Eastern Conference's second seed of the 2022 Audi MLS Cup playoffs. Notably in 2022, Pantemis was named to the Canadian Men's National Team roster for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The goalkeeper was first named to the Canadian senior national team in September of 2017, making the bench for Canada's 2-0 win over Jamaica in a friendly match. Pantemis has been a part of Canada's youth squads, recording eight appearances for the U-20 and U-23 teams.
Muse, 24, will join the Timbers after helping the Charleston Battery reach the 2023 USL Championship final, logging 33 appearances (33 starts) through the 2023 season. In the 2023 USL season, Muse was tied for the league lead in clean sheets with 13, setting a new career high. Additionally, the goalkeeper recorded 86 saves during the season, the seventh-most in the league. The Louisville, Kentucky native signed his first MLS contract in 2019 with Seattle Sounders FC, spending two seasons with the Sounders as their 11th Homegrown player. On loans, Muse tallied 24 appearances with Tacoma Defiance (2019-2020), 15 appearances with San Diego Loyal (2021) and 30 appearances with Memphis 901 (2022) before joining Charleston in the 2023 season. Notably, Muse spend two years at Indiana University (2017-2018) where he was named to the First Team All-American and the 2018 Big 10 Goalkeeper of the Year.
