LA Galaxy News Release
LOS ANGELES - The LA Galaxy today announced that the club has signed free agent goalkeeper John McCarthy to a two-year contract through the end of the 2025 MLS season.
McCarthy, 31, has posted 15 shutouts and 190 saves in 68 league appearances (67 starts) across eight seasons played in MLS (2015 - Present). Notably, McCarthy was named the 2022 MLS Cup MVP after making two saves in LAFC's penalty-kick shootout victory over the Philadelphia Union. During the 2023 campaign, McCarthy made 25 regular-season appearances (25 starts) and logged eight shutouts and 67 saves with a career-best 1.24 goals-against average.
"John brings a wealth of experience, ranging from playing in the USL to being the MVP of an MLS Cup Final, that is invaluable," said LA Galaxy General Manager Will Kuntz. "He is a veteran leader who will add depth and competition at the goalkeeper position and we are excited to add him to our group. "
The Philadelphia, Penn., native began his MLS career with the Philadelphia Union, where he posted four shutouts in 21 games played (21 starts) across four MLS seasons (2015-2018). After departing Philadelphia, McCarthy played the 2020 season with USL Championship side Tampa Bay Rowdies, where he kept 10 clean sheets in 29 league appearances (29 starts).
Following his time with Tampa Bay, McCarthy signed with Inter Miami CF, logging three shutouts and 54 saves in 21 appearances (20 starts) over two seasons (2020-21). McCarthy made one appearance during LAFC's Supporters' Shield winning season in 2022. Additionally, McCarthy posted four shutouts in eight matches played during LAFC's run to the 2022-23 Concacaf Champions League Final, earning Golden Glove honors and being named to the Concacaf Champions League Best XI.
Beginning his professional career in 2014 with the Rochester Rhinos in USL PRO, McCarthy was named the USL PRO Rookie of the Year and the USL PRO Goalkeeper of the Year and earned USL PRO All-League First Team honors after posting 10 shutouts in 18 appearances.
