Timbers Register 2-0 Win against San Jose Earthquakes

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Timbers tallied a goal in each half to secure a 2-0 win over the San Jose Earthquakes at Providence Park on Wednesday night. Diego Chara tallied his second goal of the season, while Dairon Asprilla became the second player this season to tally double-digit goals with his 10th goal of the campaign to help secure the win.

Playoff Position

With two matches remaining in the regular season, Portland (15-13-4, 49pts) sits in fourth place in the Western Conference standings. Five points separate the Timbers and ninth-place Los Angeles FC (44pts). Portland has a two-point lead over Vancouver Whitecaps FC (47pts) in fifth place and are three points ahead of the LA Galaxy (46pts) in sixth place. Real Salt Lake (45pts) and Minnesota United FC (45pts) are currently seventh and eighth in the table. The Timbers play their final road match of the regular season campaign against Real Salt Lake on Nov. 3 before squaring off against Austin FC in their regular-season finale on Nov. 7 at Providence Park.

Driving the Attack

Dairon Asprilla scored his 10th goal of the season tonight, and his fifth goal in Portland's last five matches. In seven seasons with the Timbers, Asprilla has a total of 17 goals, and over half of those are from the 2021 campaign. He is the club's eighth player to score 10 or more goals in a single MLS season. Diego Chara recorded his second goal of the season, and 12th all-time for Portland. D. Chara is the 10th player to record two or more goals for the Timbers this year. Felipe Mora tallied his fifth assist of the season. In five matches played against San Jose, Mora has registered two goals and two assists. Santiago Moreno added his third career assist for Portland.

Home Form

The Timbers earned their 10th home win of the season. Portland's 10 home wins are tied for the most in the Western Conference this season with Vancouver. The Timbers are one of six teams in MLS with 10 or more home wins in 2021. It marks the fifth time (2021, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2013) Portland has recorded 10 or more home wins in a single season. In addition, the Timbers have scored 32 goals in home matches, which is tied for fourth-most in MLS this campaign. Individually, Asprilla has tallied seven of his 10 goals this season at Providence Park.

POR - Diego Chara (Felipe Mora, Santiago Moreno), 34th minute: From the top of the box, Santiago Moreno slipped a pass toward the end line for Felipe Mora. Mora cut a square ball across to Diego Chara, who poked it past the San Jose goalkeeper and into the back of the net.

POR - Dairon Asprilla, 55th minute: San Jose's goalkeeper bobbled a long ball played into the box by Moreno. Dairon Asprilla recovered it with his back to the goal just outside of the box, juggling it up to himself before biking it into the net.
