HAMILTON, Ontario - CF Montréal advanced to the Canadian Championship final after winning an 8-7 (0-0) penalty shootout against Forge FC on Wednesday night at Tim Hortons Field, in Hamilton. Goalkeeper Sebastian Breza, the 11th player to take a penalty kick for CFMTL, scored the decisive goal against fellow goalkeeper Triston Henry.
In the final (date and venue to be determined), CF Montréal will face the winner of the other semi-final match between Toronto FC and Pacific FC next Wednesday at BMO Field.
The Club resumes its MLS playoff chase this Saturday at 4pm against the New York Red Bulls at Red Bull Arena (TVA Sports, 91.9 Sports, TSN690.ca).
Game note:
-Midfielder Rida Zouhir earned his first career start for CF Montréal (all competitions).
WILFRIED NANCY
"The opponent played well tonight. We didn't manage to find the necessary resources to do better tonight. I would still like to congratulate the players because it wasn't an easy match to play considering the rotations I made to the team. But I am very pleased for the guys that played tonight because we're advancing to the final."
SEBASTIAN BREZA
"I just wanted to score to go home on a positive note, be happy on the return flight and start planning for the final. Of course, I wanted to score to put an end to the shootout and advance to the final. As goalkeepers we don't often get the chance to take penalty kicks ourselves. It is a bit unexpected. But nowadays goalkeepers use their feet frequently as well so it's not overly challenging to do. But making the back of that net move was my priority."
