Portland Timbers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - Portland Timbers midfielder Rodney Wallace has been named to the Costa Rica National Team roster for the 2014 UNCAF Copa Centroamericana tournament from Sept. 3-13, it was announced today.
In Group A, Costa Rica will square off against Nicaragua at RFK Memorial Stadium in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 3 before concluding the group stage against Panama on Sept. 7 at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas. The top two teams from Group A and Group B automatically qualify for the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup, while the Copa Centroamericana champion qualifies for the 2016 Copa América Centenario.
Wallace, 26, has 16 caps and scored three goals for Costa Rica since making his international debut on Sept. 2, 2011. He tallied the game-winner in his debut, contributing to a 1-0 victory over the United States. Born in San José, Costa Rica, Wallace was a member of Costa Rica's 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup squad, starting two matches during the tournament. He helped the Ticos win the 2013 Copa Centroamericana, appearing in all five games of the tournament and scoring the game-winner in the semifinal against El Salvador.
In his last appearance for Costa Rica, Wallace played 72 minutes as a starter in a 1-0 loss to the United States on July 16, 2013, in the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Following a successful recovery after offseason knee surgery, Wallace made his season debut for the Timbers, starting and playing 65 minutes on June 27 against Sporting Kansas City. He has tallied one goal and one assist in nine appearances (4 starts) for Portland this season.
