Real Salt Lake News Release
REAL SALT LAKE TO FACE SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES AT BUCK SHAW STADIUM ON SATURDAY
Real Salt Lake continues its road schedule this Saturday, when it heads to California to take on San Jose Earthquakes at 8:30 p.m. MT at Buck Shaw Stadium. Saturday's match will be broadcast live on CW30 and ESPN 700 AM, and 102.3 La Gran D FM.
Real Salt Lake enters this weekend's matchup coming off a 2-1 loss to FC Dallas at Toyota Stadium last Friday. The defeat ended the Claret-and-Cobalt's unbeaten run at six games and its win streak at three games. RSL had gone 4-0-2 in MLS play heading into the clash at Dallas. The Claret-and-Cobalt fell behind in the second half despite having a man advantage, when FCD DF Je-Vaughn Watson scored off a corner kick in the 50th minute. Dallas went on to double its lead on a counter attack through MF Fabian Castillo in the 74th minute. Real Salt Lake was able to pull one back in stoppage time through FW Olmes Garcia but it proved not enough to complete the comeback. RSL now sits third in the Western Conference with an 11-5-9 record and total of 42 points.
Real Salt Lake and San Jose Earthquakes have met once before this year, a wild 3-3 draw at Buck Shaw Stadium on March 15. San Jose took an early lead, getting a sixth minute goal from FW Chris Wondolowski to go up 1-0. RSL hit back with three unanswered goals before halftime, with Captain Kyle Beckerman equalizing with a fantastic 11th minute strike before FW Joao Plata scored in the 32nd and MF Luke Mulholland tallied in first half stoppage time to give RSL a 3-1 lead at the break. Unfortunately, the Claret-and-Cobalt couldn't hold onto its advantage, with DF Victor Bernardez scoring in the 75th and 95th to give the Quakes a result.
Real Salt Lake has an even history against the San Jose Earthquakes, posting a 7-7-6 all-time regular season record against the California side. RSL has a 4-4-2 all-time regular season road record against the Bay Area club.
San Jose enter Saturday's match coming off a 4-2 loss to Philadelphia Union at PPL Park last Sunday. The Earthquakes are now winless in their last four games and sit eighth in the Western Conference with a 6-10-7 record and total of 25 points.
Real Salt Lake will return home after Saturday's match to take on FC Dallas at 8:00 p.m. MT on Saturday, Sept. 6. Tickets to the RSL-Dallas contest can be purchased at the Rio Tinto Stadium box office, online at http://www.realsaltlake.com/Tickets or over the phone at 801-727-2700.
REAL SALT LAKE FALLS 2-1 TO FC DALLAS AT TOYOTA STADIUM ON FRIDAY
Real Salt Lake (11-5-9, 42 points, West #3), was unable to extend its six-game unbeaten run on Friday night, falling 2-1 to Western Conference foe FC Dallas (12-7-6, 42 points, West #2) at Toyota Stadium.
Real Salt Lake could not overcome two second half goals despite having a man advantage for the final 45 minutes. FC Dallas FW Blas Perez received a second yellow card in the 45th minute to reduce the home side to 10 men at the close of the first half. In spite of being down a man, FCD proved to be the more clinical side, scoring the opening goal in the 50th minute through FCD DF Je-Vaughn Watson and doubling its lead through MF Fabian Castillo in the 74th minute. Real Salt Lake was able to pull one back in stoppage time through FW Olmes Garcia but it proved not enough to complete the comeback.
The game got heated at the end of the first half with Dallas' Perez receiving a second yellow card for embellishment after a scuffle with RSL DF Chris Schuler - who also received a yellow card for the entanglement. With the second infringement, FC Dallas was reduced to 10 men for the rest of the match.
Despite being a man down, FC Dallas went on to take the lead in the 50th minute off a corner kick. FC Dallas MF Michel took the corner, whipping a ball into the box that found FCD's Watson open in front of net who then managed to chest the ball into the goal.
RSL head coach Jeff Cassar decided to make an offensive substitution a minute later, taking off DF Chris Wingert for Garcia to situate three attackers up top. Dallas went on to take advantage of the vacated left side and doubled its lead in the 74th minute on the counter. FCD rookie Tesho Akindele headed down a ball into the path of Castillo who then torched his way down the field past a recovering RSL back line into the box. The Colombian went on to finish a lovely right-footed shot to the far post.
The Claret-and-Cobalt found a consolation goal in the 91st minute. RSL FW Joao Plata took a corner kick that drifted through the 18 yard box that RSL MF Sebastian Velasquez collected on the right side. The Colombian sent a cross back into the area which Garcia attempted to bicycle kick from six yards out. The shot took a bounce in front of goal before slipping into the near post.
REAL SALT LAKE RESERVES TO TAKE ON LA GALAXY II ON WEDNESDAY
The Real Salt Lake Reserves will continue its MLS Reserve League schedule on Wednesday, when it travels to southern California to take on LA Galaxy II at 4:00 p.m. MT at StubHub Center.
The RSL Reserves have had mixed results this year, going 1-1-4 in 2014. In its last Reserve League action, the Claret-and-Cobalt drew Colorado Rapids Reserves 2-2 at Dick's Sporting Goods Park on August 3. After going down 2-0 in the first half, the Real Salt Lake staged a second half comeback with RSL FW Benji Lopez scoring twice in the 57th and 63rd minutes to earn the draw.
LA Galaxy II enter Wednesday's matchup coming off a 3-3 draw with Wilmington Hammerheads FC on Sunday. The match saw two goals from Chandler Hoffman and a stoppage-time goal from Rafael Garcia gave the hosts a point against the USL PRO side.
Wednesday's matchup in LA will be the RSL Reserves' second to last match of the 2014 season. The Claret-and-Cobalt will return to California to take on Chivas USA Reserves on Monday, Oct. 6 at 12:00 p.m. MT for its final Reserve League contest.
