August 25, 2014 - Major League Soccer (MLS) News Release

NEW YORK (Monday, August 25, 2014) - Seattle Sounders FC forward Obafemi Martins was voted Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for Week 24 of the 2014 MLS season.

Martins' two goals and assist powered Sounders FC to a 4-2 victory over Cascadia rivals the Portland Timbers on Sunday, August 24.

Martins kicked off the scoring with the first goal of the match in the 18th minute. Seattle midfielder Brad Evans made a run down the right side of the field and sent a low ball across the front of goal that Martins directed into the back of the net from close range.

In the 34th minute, Martins initiated a counterattack following a Portland Timbers corner. Martins collected the ball in the Sounders' half, carried it down the field and found Clint Dempsey with a perfectly weighted through ball. Dempsey slotted the ball past Timbers goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts for the 2-0 lead.

Martins capped off his night with a goal in the 76th minute. Martins eluded two Timbers players, quickly combined with Gonzalo Pineda near the top of the 18-yard box and then powered through a couple of Timbers defenders before beating Ricketts near post.

Seattle Sounders FC return to action on Saturday, August 30 when they host the Colorado Rapids at 4 p.m. ET.

The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from NASR. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media. More information and membership information can be found at http://www.soccerreporters.com/ .
