
Timbers Finalize Purchase of Argentinian Midfielder TomÃÂs Conechny

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Timbers announced today that the club has finalized the purchase of Tomás Conechny from Superliga Argentina club San Lorenzo, signing the midfielder to a new contract utilizing Targeted Allocation Money (TAM). Conechny was originally acquired by the Timbers on loan from San Lorenzo on July 17, 2018.
"We are very pleased to secure the services of Tomás Conechny on a more permanent basis," said Gavin Wilkinson, general manager and president of soccer for the Timbers. "Since joining the club a year ago, Tomás has shown encouraging development as a talented and dynamic young player who can play any of the attacking positions on our squad. We continue to believe he can contribute to our club in the immediate term, while providing us with long-term options at several positions."
Since joining the Timbers, Conechny, 21, has made 12 appearances (2 starts), tallying one goal in 252 minutes played. In his first start of the 2019 campaign, Conechny scored his first goal in league play for the Timbers against the Montreal Impact on June 26. Additionally, Conechny has made three appearances (3 starts) on loan to T2, tallying one goal in 217 minutes played.
Conechny began his career with San Lorenzo in 2016, making his professional debut on Oct. 16, 2016, in a 3-1 win over Arsenal de SarandÃ. The Comodoro Rivadavia, Argentina, native made 14 appearances in the top division for San Lorenzo. In the 2017-18 campaign, Conechny made seven appearances for San Lorenzo, including three starts.
"We are extremely happy that Tomás is fully a part of the Timbers," said Giovanni Savarese, head coach of the Timbers. "As a younger player, we are excited to continue fostering his development and his talents, as Tomás is an important part of the team in the present, and in the future."
On the international stage, Conechny has earned 21 caps (14 starts) at the youth levels for Argentina, representing his native country at the 2015 U-17 Sudamericano, the 2015 U-17 FIFA World Cup, the 2017 U-20 Sudamericano and the 2017 U-20 FIFA World Cup. Overall, Conechny has scored seven goals at the youth levels for Argentina, including a five-goal production at the 2015 U-17 Sudamericano in Paraguay, which ranked as a team-high during the tournament.
Conechny will occupy an international slot on the Timbers roster.
