FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - Three New England Revolution players have been selected to the MLSsoccer.com Team of the Week for Week 20. Midfielder Carles Gil, defender Andrew Farrell, and goalkeeper Matt Turner each earned selections after a pair of shutout victories this week -- Wednesday's 4-0 win vs. Vancouver Whitecaps FC, and Sunday's 2-0 victory at FC Cincinnati. The results extended the club's unbeaten run to a league-best 10 games (6-0-4) as the Revolution have climbed above the playoff line into seventh place in the Eastern Conference.
Gil, 26, continued his remarkable debut MLS season with two goals and two assists in his two starts this week, raising his team-high totals on the year to seven goals and eight helpers in 22 league starts. Gil has scored goals in three straight games, ranks third in MLS in chances created, and his 15 combined goals and assists are tied for second among all MLS newcomers in 2019. On Wednesday, the Spaniard delivered his fourth game-winning assist on Gustavo Bou's spectacular first-half goal, and he added his own strike on the other side of halftime. He followed that effort with the game-winning tally at FC Cincinnati, cleaning up a loose ball in box in the ninth minute to give the Revs a 1-0 lead. Gil added an assist on Antonio Delamea's goal in the 56th minute.
The Team of the Week selection marks Gil's second of the year. He last made the league's best XI in Week 14 after the 2-1 win at LA Galaxy on June 2. That week, Gil led all players in Audi Player Index points with 1,106. Gil also earned recognition on the Team of the Week bench for Week 5 after the Revolution topped Minnesota United FC at home on March 30.
Farrell, 27, started both of the Revolution victories in central defense, helping the club to back-to-back clean sheet wins for the first time since September 2017. The seventh-year defender has started 18 consecutive games this season, and has not missed a minute of action since returning from an eye injury on March 30. In his MLS career, Farrell owns 206 starts and 18,348 minutes played, both of which are the most among all outfield players since 2013.
Turner, 25, earned his seventh and eighth career shutouts this week and raised his career record to 13-11-11. In 2019, the New Jersey native has made nine starts and posted a 5-1-2 mark with three clean sheets. After a quiet night in Wednesday's match, in which Turner was rarely tested in the 4-0 win, the fourth-year pro contributed seven saves, including a key double stop in the second half, at FC Cincinnati on Sunday. This marks Turner's first Team of the Week selection in 2019 after receiving four nods in 2018.
New England returns to action on Saturday, July 27, when the Revs will look to match a club-record unbeaten streak of 11 games, set in 2005, against Orlando City SC. The match at Gillette Stadium kicks off at 7:00 p.m. ET and will air locally on NBC Sports Boston, 98.5 The Sports Hub, and 1260 AM Nossa Radio.
