Lancaster Stormers News Release
The Lancaster Barnstormers rode four RBI from Terry Tiffee and the back end of the bullpen to an 8-6 victory over the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, completing a four-game sweep, Monday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
With the win, the Barnstormers (21-9) increased their Freedom Division lead to six games over the York Revolution.
Doubles by Adam Godwin, Yunesky Sanchez and Jose Herrera in the top of the first inning put Lancaster starter Ross Peeples into a deep hole early, but the Barnstormers roared back off lefty Keith Ramsey (1-3) in the bottom of the inning.
Gilberto Mejia ignited the rally with a single into center and raced to third on Matt Watson's single to right. Tommy Everidge followed with another base hit through the hole on the right side to drive in a run. Fernando Seguignol stung a grounder to third. Brandon Pinckney forced Everidge at second, but the relay throw to first sailed past the bag allowing Watson to score. Aaron Herr doubled to left, and Tiffee followed suit to drive in two runs for a 4-2 lead.
The Blue Crabs were able to put another run on the board in the top of the second. Casey Benjamin doubled to right, and Jeremy Owens bunted his way aboard. Rodriguez drove in a run with an infield out.
Lancaster responded with three more. Watson opened the bottom of the second with an infield single, the second of his four hits on the night. Everidge, who also had four hits, singled to left as Watson sprinted to third. Seguignol rapped into a double play as one run scored. Herr laced a single to left center, and Tiffee followed with a two-run homer onto the picnic deck for a 7-3 lead.
Seguignol's jolt with two outs in the fourth extended the lead to 8-3. The Barnstormers added seven more hits over the remainder of the game for a season-high total of 18 but could not dent the scoreboard again.
Peeples (3-2) left after allowing 10 hits and three runs in five innings. Tim McNab was reached for a run in the sixth, and Southern Maryland narrowed the gap even more in the seventh. Christian Lopez yanked a one-out single into left, and Benjamin followed with a booming RBI double off the center field fence. Owens knocked in another run with a single pulled over Tiffee's head at third.
Jonah Bayliss walked the first batter he faced, putting the tying run on base, but he and T.J. Beam combined to retire the final eight Blue Crabs to nail down the sweep. Beam, asked to close after Jeff Bennett had worked the previous two nights, earned his first save.
The Barnstormers will host the Long Island Ducks on Tuesday evening to start a three-game series. Cesar Carrillo (1-1) will make his Clipper Magazine Stadium debut against Long Island's Heath Phillips (1-2). Game time is 6:30. The game will be aired on Fox Sports Radio, 1490, WLPA and streamed on sportsjuice.com and ibnsports.com.
