Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
Waldorf, MD-The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs got five homeruns from four different players on Tuesday night at Regency Furniture Stadium in an 8-3 win over the Bridgeport Bluefish. The win also snapped a season-long four-game losing streak for the Blue Crabs.
Southern Maryland got the ball rolling in the first on a solo homer by shortstop Yunesky Sanchez (3) to take a 1-0 lead. Bridgeport tied things in the second on a sac fly from leftfielder Colin Roberson, before a two-run blast by Blue Crabs catcher Christian Lopez (4) gave Southern Maryland the lead for good in the bottom of the second.
Southern Maryland expanded its lead to 5-1 on a two-run single from designated hitter Jose Herrera, which were the only two runs the Blue Crabs scored not via the homer.
The Bluefish would bounce back in the fourth on a two-run homerun from first baseman Wes Bankston (5) to make the score 5-3.
But that was as close as Bridgeport would get. Centerfielder Jeremy Owens (3) went deep with a solo homer in the fourth to make it a 6-3 game, before third baseman Tanner Townsend (2) and Owens again (4) went back-to-back in the sixth (both solo shots) to expand the Southern Maryland lead to 7-3.
Owens, Herrera and Sanchez each had two hits for the Blue Crabs while right fielder Danny Punam had two singles for Bridgeport and was the only Bluefish to have more than one hit in the game.
Starter Brian Slocum (2-0) got the win after allowing two earned runs on six hits in six innings of work. He also walked none and struck out four. Starter Juan Padilla suffered the loss for Bridgeport after allowing eight runs on 13 hits in 5.2 innings. He walked one and struck out six.
The Blue Crabs and the Bluefish tangle in game two of their three-game series tomorrow at 10:35am. The Blue Crabs will send southpaw Jason Waddell (2-2, 4.66 ERA) to the mound against righty Miguel Mejia (1-2, 4.95 ERA). The game can be heard on www.somdbluecrabs.com.
